Today's post is for the letter:
In case you don't recognize that red "B", it is the logo for the Boston Red Sox. Having lived my entire life in Massachusetts, I'm definitely a Boston Red Sox fan. I began seriously watching the Sox in the days of Carlton Fisk, Carl Yastrzemski, Jim Rice, and Dwight Evans. An autographed photo of Rice used to hang on my bedroom wall.
Our next door neighbor, who was a New York Yankees fan, and I had a little rivalry going. I've actually never understood how you can live here and be a Yankees fan. It seems almost sacrilegious. But there are many fans of the Yanks living here. My daughters like to sing, "Red Sox rule, Yankees drool" to any of their classmates who dare not love the Sox.
The Curse of the Bambino was a superstition that blamed the Sox's inability to win a World Series from 1918-2004 on the sale of Babe Ruth to the Yankees during the off-season of 1919-1920. I just finished reading, Joe DiMaggio: The Long Vigil by Jerome Charyn yesterday, so Babe Ruth is on my mind.
Watching the Boston Red Sox win the 2004 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals was amazing. The Curse was broken and we have high hopes for the team this year.
Sad news came from the organization yesterday, as it was announced that former Red Sox GM Lou Gorman passed away on Friday at the age of 82. Perhaps the loss can be partially to blame for the Sox losing their season opener to the Texas Rangers yesterday, 9 - 5. Boston will have a chance to redeem themselves this weekend as they play the Rangers again Saturday night and Sunday, then take a day off before playing the Cleveland Indians on April 5th. They'll meet the Yankees for the first time in the regular season on Friday, April 8th.
