2020 Personal and Professional Goals

It's the first weekend of January. The weather is cold, but sunny. We might see some white stuff this week--not a ton of it. Honestly, all I want to do right now is sit in my house and write, read, and blog. The real world and my wallet say other plans need to be part of the agenda.

If you've followed me long enough, you know I set goals every year. Sometimes I achieve them and sometimes I don't. I never beat myself up, but I'm sick and tired of the pattern. In addition, I'm experiencing some health challenges I'm not comfortable with and need to focus on my well-being. So, this is my year of working intentionally toward changing habits. Baby steps and discipline are key. As such, I bought two magazines this year to help me.

Now, if I had picked up the first one before today, I would have seen that I was supposed to start the first week of December. Whoops! That said, I've read the introductory articles and will move forward starting with the first week of January.

Because the planner I had last year required a lot of effort, as soon as real estate got hectic it went by the wayside. I've totally given up on time blocking, which was one of my goals in 2019. Do I need more discipline in how I spend my time? Yes. Will I even manage baby steps if it feels like a tooth extraction? No. That's why this planner may work better. I'll track activities, write a to-do list (which I do anyway), chart my moods, and journal.

What caught my eye about the Prevention® magazine is the "Transform Your Sleep!" headline. I've never required a ton of sleep, but menopause and stress and, now, my ringing ears have interrupted the sleep I get. The CPAP machine required for mild sleep apnea has helped. As long as the seals are good and the fit comfortable, I often get five hours of uninterrupted sleep. The tinnitus I'm now experiencing has created obstacles, but a set of wireless headphones and some calming music help a bit.

Other articles cover bad habits, weight-loss plans, best hobbies for your mind and body, and habits to make time for. I'm in the middle of reading them now.

Here are my personal goals for 2020:

  • Exercise twice a week. This simply isn't an option anymore. I'm seeing the effects of sitting in the car or at my desk for long periods. My joints are achy and I'm not as strong as I used to be. In order to accomplish this goal, there are two things that must happen: commit to going to bed by 11 pm and waking up at 6 am. I also need to not schedule early appointments on the two days I dedicate to exercising.
  • Read the Bible daily. I've seen how much better my moods are when I spend time in the Word. If I can't spare even 5 or 10 minutes a day, then my focus is messed up.
  • Dedicate one day a week to meal planning. This one is harder since I usually work both days out of the weekend and we take my father-in-law out to dinner one weekend evening too. Mondays are no good because they are the beginning of the week, so I'm usually slammed. Maybe it is Tuesday or Friday. I signed up for Imperfect Foods to get more fruits and vegetables in the house. I'm hoping the variety is good.
  •  Make smarter food choices. I'm a junk food junkie at heart. I know it. At 15 it was easier to counteract my choices than it is at 51. Even though I can't commit to the 21 Day Fix because the level of exercise is too tough on my joints, I am going to use the containers to make better food choices. I track my calories via the Lose it! app so I can at least know where I am falling down. Meal planning should help.
  • Re-assess my commitments. I'm overwhelmed and overbooked. I did it to myself. I knew it. Saying no is tough. I currently sit on the board of three non-profits (as an officer for two), I'm moving up in leadership in the local REALTOR® association, and my family commitments are huge considering the four of us and my in-laws. Something has to give.

Now, my professional goals for 2020:

  • Put together a solid business plan. My annual business plan kept me focused all these years. It allowed me to be a top-producer from the start. This is the first time a year came to a close without a business plan in place. I wasn't feeling it, which is silly. My business plan is the first thing I need to iron out, so Wednesday morning that is my focus.
  • Commit to weekly prospecting. This is why I tried time blocking last year. Prospecting is an important part of any sales business; otherwise, you have barren times when you're struggling to make ends meet. I have a CRM, but its one of the first things to go out the window when my schedule gets hectic. Instead of time blocking, perhaps holding one day aside to work in the office or at home prospecting is a better plan. Baby steps.
  • Read two business or leadership books this year. I planned to read four last year and ended up reading five. This year, I want more flexibility with what I am reading for career and pleasure. I want to pick up a book simply because I want to read it, not because I've been asked to review it or have some goal I need to reach. That said, two carefully selected books in this genre will be good for me.
  • Re-assess my commitments. See personal goals. This is the year I learn to say no for the sake of my health and my sanity.
  • Take my Broker's Test. I took the Broker's course in October. Now, I need to finalize what needs to be done and make time to take the test.
  • Make an important decision by January 10. I can't say more about it, but it's a decision I've needed to make for a long time.
Here's to making 2020 a great year. I hope you'll share your goals as well.

Mailbox Monday - Nov 25

Mailbox Monday is a meme started by Marcia of To Be Continued. Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. It now has a permanent home at the Mailbox Monday blog.

Happy Monday, everyone! I hope all my USA friends are prepared for Thanksgiving. I made myself a promise to shop early so I can avoid the grocery store this week.

With the work schedule slowing down a bit I was able to clean the living areas, put up some fall decorations, get some reading done, and enjoy lunch out with our church family. Since the church split up, we don't see one another as much as we used to, and we knew once the holidays are upon us we might not be getting together. What a tremendous blessing to see each other and spend a few hours catching up.

I still haven't settled on a new church. Nothing has felt right yet. Part of that might be because the girls remain angry over what happened and refuse to attend a new church, so I go by myself or with my mother-in-law when she is here. I would love to attend as a family again.

My physical mailbox was empty, but I grabbed this Kindle freebie on Sunday. It is the first in a series. I hope I get to read at least one seasonal book before December ends.

I pray all of those celebrating Thanksgiving find it to be a day filled with happiness and blessings.

Mailbox Monday - Nov 11

We are somehow at Monday again. This week we are expecting a bit of the wet and white stuff. Doubtful it will be much, but thankfully the leaves are picked up and the trampoline mostly dismantled for the season.

Since I was kind enough to myself to take a weekend off, I began the task of cleaning my office. I've done little pick ups here and there, but now that I am treasurer for two organizations and am sick and tired of boxes of books stacked in my upstairs hallway, I need to deep clean and organize.

These are magazines I saved for two decades for some crazy reason. They are getting recycled.

I've stopped most of my subscriptions because I never get around to reading them. Why waste the money?

My office closet floor is totally empty right now. That hasn't happened in I don't know how long. I'm going through the boxes of books to make sure I want to keep everything in them. If not, they are making their way out to the library.

I won an Amazon gift card from a company event and used it to pick up three new books. Two arrived on Sunday.

I am expecting the final one tomorrow.

On this Veteran's Day, I wish to extend my sincere thanks to all who have served our country. May God bless you and your families. I was thrilled to hear President Trump proclaimed November as National Veterans and Military Families Month.

I hope you all have a wonderful week.

Mailbox Monday - Oct 28

Mailbox Monday is a meme started by Marcia of To Be Continued. Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. It now has a permanent home at the Mailbox Monday blog.

Welcome back to Monday. I thought my schedule would loosen up a bit, but it didn't. A new listing, a charity event, showings, preparing for two closings this week, and blogging at the 4RV Reading, Writing, & Art News and the Christian Children's Authors blog did not allow for a lot of free time. Oh, I managed an open house, a company meeting where I won an Amazon gift card, an educational panel on crumbling concrete, two doctors appointments, and an oil change and tire rotation on the car too. Where did making supper and doing laundry get done? Who knows, but somehow it came together.

I'm so thrilled that one manuscript I was editing is now done. I can't wait to see this book hit the market. I'm glad to know the author is working on a sequel.

My mailbox held a few treasures this week. I love seasonal titles. No one needs to give me an excuse to read one of Karen White's books either. Challenge is I haven't read the previous two books in the Tradd Street series; so now I need to decide if I read this one anyway or go back and read the others first.

I was asked to give a reading of my book, A Christmas Kindness, at an upcoming Christmas event at a local church. I ordered 25 copies, but didn't want to go too crazy. The publisher is re-releasing the softcover next year under my married name (I used my maiden name on this one) and also is releasing a hardcover version in 2020. I'm working on the additional material for the hardcover right now.

That's it from my neck of the woods. How about you? Any seasonal offerings in your mailbox? It is definitely that time of year.

Miss me? I disappeared for a bit, but it wasn't intentional. I shared some of my crazy calendar in this Task it Tuesday post. Here are more goings on:

  • Took on a new editing project.
  • As a result of the book promotion workshop, I also picked up a new client looking for editorial development.
  • Listed a new property.
  • Attended the WriteAngles Conference and met with an agent. She wants me to tweak some of what I wrote and submit it to her. Happy dance!!!
  • I'm working on additional material for A Christmas Kindness, which will be released in hardcover by 4RV Publishing next year.
This week I will be taking the next step in my real estate career by studying for my broker's license.

Not much reading going on lately, but I picked up this book at the conference.

We arrived home from the Outer Banks on Saturday, but the post office appears to be holding my mail hostage. I don't think I am expecting any books, but who knows.

Right before we left, this book I had on pre-order arrived. I'm so excited. Can't wait to read it.

Somehow we ended up back at Monday again. I didn't blog much last week because I was dealing with last minute closing issues. Thankfully, everything worked out fine. Two closings last week, updating marketing for another listing, getting three lots under contract, and two open houses kept me tied up.

This week will be a bit hectic because animals and people have doctor visits, we are getting ready for the girls to head back to school, and I'm working on this great project for one of my publishers that I am totally excited about.

My mailbox has been busy too! These two arrived.

My virtual mailbox also picked up these ones.

What presents did your mailbox hold this past week?

Mailbox Monday - July 22

Here we are at Monday again. This past week was filled with catching up at work, a minor real estate dilemma, a writing webinar, and dinner with friends.

In my book world, two new ones arrived, which I need to review in September.

The first is a ghost story and the second an alternative history novel. Not my typical reading fare, but I like to delve into other genres when I get the chance.

What was in your mailbox this week? What genres are your favorites and what is a genre that you need to step outside your comfort zone to read?

Task It Tuesday - June 18

Originally created by The Geeky Blogger, Task It Tuesday is a weekly meme to help you--and me--get things done. The challenge is to post a task or list of tasks you want to complete before next Tuesday. These tasks can help you with your blogging life, reading life, personal or professional life.

I am at the point of crying mercy. My list only grows. It's like I can't check anything off it.

Okay, enough whining. Life is good, and though I am not accomplishing what I want all the time, I am still managing to get a lot done and still enjoy life.

Here is my list for the week:

  • Daily Bible reading (still catching up)
  • Beta read a manuscript - 80% done
  • Edit the next chapter of a manuscript for the publisher
  • Blogging
  • Review one book
  • Make lists for vacation
  • Workout - Friday (I am doing stretches while cooking these days, so at least that is better than nothing)
  • Start bringing up things from the basement for vacation
  • Weed the garden

Mailbox Monday - Jun 3

It's that wonderful time of year again--end of school. This year it came about a month earlier than usual. Both girls are done with school until August. With the Lil' Diva graduating from high school--thank God for little blessings--it was a hectic week of senior events and a medical procedure that I foolishly jammed between them.

Prom night

Lil' Diva, Lil' Princess & the Boy

Our Graduate

I truly can't believe she graduated already. It seems like she just started Kindergarten.

The other thing that happened this weekend is that we decided there was nothing left at our old church to save. I'm sad, but strangely at peace with the whole thing. God has a plan. I'm sure it will be revealed at some point.

On the mailbox front, the only new offering is this book that I needed to review.

Mailbox Monday - May 27

Please join me in saying a prayer for the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect freedom around the world. As it says in the Gospel of John 15:13, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

Many times, our armed forces are laying down their lives for strangers, never mind friends. I'm not sure I could do the same.

The mailbox was slow this week, but I've got plenty to keep me busy. The Lil' Diva graduates this coming Friday, so there are senior events at school and prom to look forward to. I've got a medical procedure scheduled for Thursday, so I'll lose a bit of work time. Better make the best of the rest of the week.

Here's what my mailbox held:

Mailbox Monday - May 13

We are back to Monday again. I hope my fellow moms had a nice Mother's Day. The weather was yucky, but at least Saturday I got a chance to clean up the flower beds and move some of the plants I've been wanting to move for the past couple of years.

The family treated me to a bunch of nice cards.

Then we all went out to eat.

My mother-in-law is staying with us, which is nice. I've been struggling with a bit of depression lately. All this nonsense with the church really has me down. I need to find a new church, but don't really want to. I'll bring her to church somewhere while she is here, but it isn't the same. Hopefully she is okay with it.

On the book front, I treated myself to two books. One had been on pre-order. The other I bought while shopping at Walmart yesterday.

That's it from me this week. Hope you enjoy all your new books.

Mailbox Monday - April 15

Welcome to Monday! It is tax return day, so the post office will be busy. I am dropping off ours and the in-laws' returns. I don't relish it, but it must be done. The Lil' Diva and I are also wrapping up the college tours today. We think she has already decided, but we want to check out the last one on her accepted list.

This was a nice weekend. I started my barre workout program. They are 10 minute workouts, so I should be able to fit those in. I also planted the early spring vegetables this Saturday. The hubby and I joined his father at the veterans appreciation dinner that night as well. It was Palm Sunday today, so we went to the new church (still not sure if it will be our permanent place) and the pastor gave a wonderful message on how Christ's death and resurrection means the devil is defeated, but he just can't accept it. Spiritual warfare is one of my favorite topics.

I'm not reading as much lately. Partially because work has been busy, but also because I'm tired all the time. I've got an appointment with the pulmonary department now that they have discovered I have mild sleep apnea.

Here is what my mailbox held last week.

I also bought this book with an Amazon credit.

That's it from my neck of the woods. Hope you'll share what was in your mailbox. Enjoy your week.

Mailbox Monday - March 11

Mailbox Monday is a meme started by Marcia of To Be Continued. Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. It now has a permanent home at the Mailbox Monday blog.

It's Monday. Is there snow where you are? Gosh, I just want it all to go away so I can plan out my garden and see some birds.

I've had three closings since February 28 and I am gearing up for some listings, so we decided to take a quick trip to Cape Cod for some R&R. The Lil' Princess is still on school vacation and the Lil' Diva took half a day Friday.

It was nice to get away. I didn't even bring my laptop. Theo loved the beach, even though it was cool.

My mailbox was empty, but since we were away I got a chance to do some reading.

I am also reading this devotional for Lent, which started Wednesday. As an aside, did  you hear about the teacher who forced a student to remove his ashes that he got for Ash Wednesday? Sounds like the teacher didn't realize how important they are to Catholics.

That's it from my neck of the woods. Hope you have a great week. Please share what your mailbox looked like.
