Battle of the Bulge - A major German offensive that took place on December 16, 1944 with the objective of splitting the Allied armies with a surprise blitzkrieg through the Ardennes to Antwerp. General Dwight D. Eisenhower rushed in reinforcements. Lieutenant General George S. Patton amazingly turned his Third U.S. Army to the north and counterattacked the German flank. American troops fought through January to restore the front. Hitler would never be able to launch such an offensive again. But it was at a great cost.
