How Businesses are Incorporating Wind Power to Save Thousands per Year by Ken Myers

In North Carolina, the Outer Bank Brewing Station is a business that has triumphed over diversity in order to build a more "green" establishment. The wind turbine the business has in operation saves the owners more than $1800 per year in energy costs. This means that more than $150 per month is saved on average from a simply erected 80-foot tower combined with a three-bladed BWC Excel motor.

Wind power is one of the cheapest methods of delivering an alternate power source. Although the construction cost of the 80-foot tower set Outer Bank Brewing Station back $50,000, the business will save more than that in the future years to come. Aside from the financial bonuses, the wind turbine will reduce the power consumed from the grid which allows the local community power it wouldn't have without the structure. The brewing station isn't the only business that is benefiting from the use of wind turbines.

GreenerPrinter - In California, GreenerPrinter has entered an agreement with Sterling Planet in order to convert its location to operate on 100-percent wind power. This means the location for this eco-friendly printing and graphic company will be able to operate business even if there is a local blackout of power. Through the use of wind currents and deep-cycle batteries, the establishment will be completely self-sufficient for daily business.

Hyannis Country Garden - In Massachusetts, the Hyannis Country Garden utilizes a large wind turbine that generates approximately 90-percent of the power needs for the business. This saves the Hyannis Country Garden thousands of dollars per year in energy needs. It's only fitting for the company to incorporate a sustainable method of power generation as they focus on the importance of organically growing a large variety of plant life for customers. They even help customers recycle old plastic planters and pots.

Cascade Wastewater Plant - In Wisconsin, the town of Cascade has erected two wind turbines in order to completely power its wastewater plant while saving approximately $30,000 per year in energy costs. Excess energy is to be sold to We Energies in order to net additional revenue from the use of these two turbines. Developed by Kettle View Renewable Energy, LLC, the Cascade wastewater treatment plant is the first in Wisconsin to be Net-Zero energy.

How Does it Work? - It's easy to teach a child how wind power actually works. Although you can purchase a wind turbine project for less than $100 for kids to build, an example of a power generator is under the hood of your car. The alternator of your vehicle works in the exact same fashion as the wind turbine with one exception. Instead of the generator being turned by a belt and gasoline engine, the wind creates the movement of the sophisticated alternator. As the alternator spins, power is generated and used to power electrical devices within the vehicle as well as charging the battery. No toxic or consumable fuel is used when deriving power from the wind, however. The more wind that is present, the more power can be generated from the turbine.

Since the Outer Bank Brewing Station erected its own wind turbine, many other businesses have implemented renewable energy sources to offset power costs. IKEA has renovated the rooftops of many of its Eastern locations in order to promote sustainable business. Walmart has lined many of its Maryland locations with solar arrays and is working to implement the same development in Sacremento, California. And inventions that turn used cooking oil into biofuels can help other restaurants reduce waste as well as power the establishment. How much farther will this renewable energy trend continue? Are we on the precipice of a new world of sustainable and efficient minded businesses? Whether it is out of respect for nature or reducing overhead costs, businesses are becoming more likely to utilize renewable energy methods.
