Task it Tuesday - Sep 22

Originally created by The Geeky Blogger, Task it Tuesday is a weekly meme to help you--and me--get things done. The challenge is to post a task or list of tasks you want to complete before next Tuesday. These tasks can help you with your blogging life, reading life, personal or professional life.

Wow! What a week it has been. I accomplished more than planned, made that decision that had I been praying about (which didn't end up going as expected), and finally pulled the plug on some old blogs.

Here is what I needed to accomplish last week:

  • Daily Bible reading--DONE
  • Finish social media calendar for book promotion--DONE
  • Walking three days--DONE
  • Two client meetings--DONE
  • Stage new listing--Finishing tomorrow
  • Continue fall cleaning--First floor done, maybe starting the second floor Sunday
  • Change decorations--DONE
  • Keep reading Morning Star--DONE
  • Finish Chapter 5 in editing project--Halfway there
  • Clean the shed roof
  • Look into getting a small dumpster
  • Set up Mass Save audit--DONE

The nice thing about fall cleaning, or spring cleaning for that matter, is that you go through things and consider what's worth keeping and what should be donated or discarded. My motivation to accomplish so much stemmed from the decision, which didn't work out. While I am disappointed, I've discovered God knows much more than me about what is best. So, while this door is closed, a window will open somewhere.

This week's list looks like this:

  • Daily Bible reading
  • Walking three days
  • Two client meetings
  • Stage new listing
  • Continue fall cleaning
  • Complete three marketing proposals
  • Finish Chapter 5 in editing project
  • Clean the shed roof
  • Look into getting a small dumpster
  • Three meetings
  • Virtual BusinessWest event
  • Bring the Lil' Princess to her driver's test Saturday
  • Start reading two books
Here's hoping you have a blessed week. I leave you with an inspirational quote.

Task it Tuesday - Sept 24

Originally created by The Geeky Blogger, Task It Tuesday is a weekly meme to help you--and me--get things done. The challenge is to post a task or list of tasks you want to complete before next Tuesday. These tasks can help you with your blogging life, reading life, personal or professional life.

Hard to believe more than a month has passed since I posted a Task it Tuesday. So, what's been going on with all of you? My world kind of looked like this:

  • Came home from the Outer Banks and moved me mother-in-law in with us two days later.
  • I worked part of our vacation, but things kicked into high gear as soon as I returned: three new listings within a week of being back (one unexpected), met with the elder care attorney, met with some of my business partners, meetings up the wazoo, and the market is moving so fast in some places if you blink twice you might miss something.
  • Both girls started school, which made life easier and more challenging: back to regular schedules, but that means I'm driving the youngest around. Permit is coming at the end of the year.
  • Took in the annual MAR Conference in September and also held a workshop at the library on book promotion.
  • Closed two properties and put four more under contract.
  • Gave the invocation at the Annual Legislative Breakfast and co-hosted a major investor event.
  • Registration for the WriteAngles Conference launched and my treasurer duties kicked up a notch.
  • Edited a manuscript for one of my publishers.
  • Writing group met.
  • Reviewed two books.
  • Board meetings for the Wilbraham Friends of the Library started.
  • Joined the board of Rick's Place.
I guess you have now figured out why I haven't been blogging much. LOL!

The schedule finally slowed down this week, so I'm taking time to review my to-do list. Many of these are tasks that will take me more than a week, but every little bit helps.
  • Daily Bible reading
  • Exercise four times a week (never happening, but the doctor says so)
  • Blogging
  • Get the yard ready for winter
  • Clean the house
  • Finish cleaning my office
  • Get 6 hours of sleep a night
  • Edit a manuscript
  • Compile additional content for the hardcover release of A Christmas Kindness in 2020
Phew! Do you want to compare to-do lists? As we enjoy fall, let us take time to remember our many blessings--big and small--throughout the day. Enjoy your week!

Task it Tuesday - Apr 23

Originally created by The Geeky Blogger, Task It Tuesday is a weekly meme to help you--and me--get things done. The challenge is to post a task or list of tasks you want to complete before next Tuesday. These tasks can help you with your blogging life, reading life, personal or professional life.

I hope everyone had a nice Easter. It was a nice holiday here. For the first time in 20 years, I didn't cook. We took the three kids, our daughter-in-law, and my father-in-law out to lunch. Then, with very full bellies, we spent time at home. This coming Sunday is Orthodox Easter, so we will be driving out to see the rest of the family.

It's been two weeks since I posted my to-do list. Here is the list I posted last time.

  • Daily Bible reading (DONE)
  • Stick to my 5-5-5-5 plan for reaching out to more people: 5 calls, 5 texts, 5 emails and 5 handwritten notes every day (NOT REALLY)
  • Time block my calendar (NO)
  • Send out Spring Maintenance letter (DONE)
  • Find two agents for Clever Tom (SEARCHING)
  • Write query letter for Clever Tom (DONE)
  • Set up ballet barre in bonus room (SET UP IN FAMILY ROOM)
  • Set out bag of donations for Wednesday (DONE)
  • Schedule appointments (DONE)
After four months of trying to make time blocking work for me, I am calling it a failed experiment. Some people love it. I hate it. Time for a new plan. Met with a real estate coach in person last week and he convinced me that unless I was going to stick to it, the time blocking was useless. I totally agree.

He did, however, show me a plan that could work to help me accomplish the 5-5-5-5 plan that is crucial to an agent's success. In addition, because I was so motivated, I was able to focus myself and get that Spring Maintenance letter out the door to my clients. That means every month so far this year, I've sent something to my clients--which has been my goal for two years. Feeling awesome!!!!

Though it has been tough to fit it in, I've worked out on the barre three times in the last week and a half. I missed yesterday because my meeting ran over, and today I am going from one thing to the next. Wednesday morning will be my plan since I have to be up and out the door by 6:40 anyway.

Clever Tom needs a home, so I wrote my query letter. Need feedback on that--I suck at query letters. I'm also looking for an agent for this story. Once the query letter is polished, I want to have a list of two to four agents to submit it to. Wish me luck.

On Sunday, I finished my Lenten devotional. This is a great book. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to reduce anxiety and worry in their lives. I'm up to work my way through another devotional in 2020 for Lent. Not sure of the topic yet.

With our daily Bible reading, we are going through 2 Samuel and some of the Psalms.

This week, I would like to accomplish the following:
  • Daily Bible reading
  • 5-5-5-5 plan for reaching out to people: 5 calls, 5 texts, 5 emails and 5 handwritten notes every day
  • Write a chapter of Amelia's Mission
  • Polish query letter for Clever Tom
  • Create list of agents to submit Clever Tom to
  • Barre workout Wednesday and Saturday
  • Start finding a way to plan meals (my diet stinks right now)
I think that's it for me. What's on your to-do list? Is there a certain task or tasks you want to accomplish this week? Is there any way for me to help you reach your goals?

Task It Tuesday - Mar 5

Originally created by The Geeky Blogger, Task It Tuesday is a weekly meme to help you--and me--get things done. The challenge is to post a task or list of tasks you want to complete before next Tuesday. These tasks can help you with your blogging life, reading life, personal or professional life.

Welcome to Tuesday. I'm actually scheduling this ahead of time as I prepare to sit and listen to some previously recorded panels from the Women in Publishing Summit. I made myself a promise this year that I would do more writing. I set my goals in January, but I didn't talk about or share this one; mainly because I knew I had aggressive real estate goals and still wanted a life. While I don't beat myself up over goals I don't meet, they do niggle me a bit. I'm happy to say that I'm making more progress than expected.

Switching gears, let's talk about last week's to-do list.
  • Daily Bible reading DONE
  • Stick to my 5-5-5-5 plan for reaching out to more people: 5 calls, 5 texts, 5 emails and 5 handwritten notes every day. Made good progress, but still not every day
  • Time block my calendar   I went back and recreated this all on Saturday. Not supposed to be the way that works.
  • Exercise Friday and Saturday  Ha! Ha! Ha!
  • Create a marketing proposal.  Almost done. This isn't something urgent because they aren't ready yet.
  • Find an agent to which to submit Clever Tom  Collected names and researching.
  • Participate in #FaithPitch DONE
Not a bad week overall. Here is what this week looks like:

  • Daily Bible reading On track
  • Stick to my 5-5-5-5 plan for reaching out to more people: 5 calls, 5 texts, 5 emails and 5 handwritten notes every day. Day behind
  • Time block my calendar DONE
  • Exercise Monday and Saturday Missed Monday
  • Find an agent to which to submit Clever Tom
  • Participate in Women in Publishing Summit
  • Finish reading The Morning Mind
Are you putting together a to-do list this week? What does your week look like?

Task It Tuesday

Originally created by The Geeky Blogger, Task It Tuesday is a weekly meme to help you--and me--get things done. The challenge is to post a task or list of tasks you want to complete before next Tuesday. These tasks can help you with your blogging life, reading life, personal or professional life.

Happy Tuesday. I had big plans for last week, but they got a bit derailed. I'm working to get back on track now. Here's what my list looked like:

  • Daily Bible reading. DONE
  • Exercise - though day or days are up in the air because most mornings I have something going on. Right now slated for Wednesday. Ummm....not even close
  • Finish two marketing proposals. Deadline of 1/9. DONE
  • Finish time blocking this week's calendar. I have to complete Wednesday and the weekend days. 95% DONE I kind of slacked over the weekend.
  • Stick to my 5-5-5-5 plan for reaching out to more people: 5 calls, 5 texts, 5 emails and 5 handwritten notes every day.  I did some days, but not all of them.
  • Update my CRM. I need to create some regular distribution lists. I have one of 100 people. I would like to expand that for marketing campaigns. Not totally done, but in progress.
  • Finish cleaning the office. Probably won't happen, but most of it is done. The closet is the only thing left. Same thing here. Some progress, but not done.

What's on this week's list:

  • Daily Bible reading
  • Exercise - Going to be a challenge this week. Probably Thurs and Fri.
  • Time block this week's calendar. Should be done, but Sunday I wasn't home.
  • Stick to my 5-5-5-5 plan for reaching out to more people: 5 calls, 5 texts, 5 emails and 5 handwritten notes every day.
  • Update my CRM.
  • Clean my office closet.
  • Take down Christmas decorations. Winter ones stay up, but trees, nativities, and Santas get packed up.
What is on your to-do list this week? Anything I can help cheer you on in getting accomplished?

Task it Tuesday - Jan 8

Originally created by The Geeky Blogger, Task It Tuesday is a weekly meme to help you--and me--get things done. The challenge is to post a task or list of tasks you want to complete before next Tuesday. These tasks can help you with your blogging life, reading life, personal or professional life.

So much to do at the beginning of the year. Most of it is fun stuff. Here is how last week's to-do list ended up:

  • Set my goals for 2019: writing, real estate, and personal. Deadline 1/2. First things, first. DONE
  • Finalize my 2019 Business Plan. Deadline 1/11. DONE
  • Finalize my President's Award application and submit it to my office for review. Deadline 1/10. DONE
  • Complete three marketing proposals. Deadline 1/6. One done and two to go.
  • Write all my known meetings and vacation days into my work calendar. DONE
  • Put together my 2019 vision board. DONE
  • Pack for NYC. We are taking a short trip into the city. Deadline 1/3. DONE. Trip was fun.
  • Start reading books for January virtual book tours. The first one is coming to NYC with me for the drive down and back. Started Tandem Demise by Duffy Brown.
  • Start my Read Through the Bible in a Year with a Chronological Bible Reading Plan. Seven days done.
So what does this week's list look like?

  • Daily Bible reading.
  • Exercise - though day or days are up in the air because most mornings I have something going on. Right now slated for Wednesday.
  • Finish two marketing proposals. Deadline of 1/9.
  • Finish time blocking this week's calendar. I have to complete Wednesday and the weekend days.
  • Stick to my 5-5-5-5 plan for reaching out to more people: 5 calls, 5 texts, 5 emails and 5 handwritten notes every day. (I failed on Monday, but I sold a house this weekend so I won't beat myself up too much.)
  • Update my CRM. I need to create some regular distribution lists. I have one of 100 people. I would like to expand that for marketing campaigns.
  • Finish cleaning the office. Probably won't happen, but most of it is done. The closet is the only thing left.
What is on your to-do list this week? What are you striving to accomplish?

Welcome to 2019! I'm sitting here an hour and a half before the ball drops and running through my mind all I have to do this week. Here's the list as I see it now:

  1. Set my goals for 2019: writing, real estate, and personal. Deadline 1/2. First things, first.
  2. Finalize my 2019 Business Plan. Deadline 1/11.
  3. Finalize my President's Award application and submit it to my office for review. Deadline 1/10.
  4. Complete three marketing proposals. Deadline 1/6.
  5. Write all my known meetings and vacation days into my work calendar.
  6. Put together my 2019 vision board.

  8. Start reading books for January virtual book tours.
  9. Start my Read Through the Bible in a Year with a Chronological Bible Reading Plan. You can join us here.
I'm sure there are more, but this is a good start and nearly manageable. Depending upon weather in NYC, I might get a bit more done than expected. I'm not walking through Central Park in the rain.

Here's wishing all of you a new year filled with blessings.

Task it Tuesday - Sep 25

Fall has arrived with a passion this week. It's in the 50s at night and comfortable during the day. It's been on the wet side. Thinking I might need to build an ark today. I have one goal this week--only one. CLEAN THIS HOUSE! It's getting less and less likely as the week progresses with real estate (people come out of the woodwork when you even think about taking a day off), but even if I get only the main living areas done, I'll be happy.

What are your goals for the week?

Task it Tuesday - Aug 21

Originally created by The Geeky Blogger, Task It Tuesday is a weekly meme to help you--and me--get things done. The challenge is to post a task or list of tasks you want to complete before next Tuesday. These tasks can help you with your blogging life, reading life, personal or professional life.

Finally feeling like the sale is in the home stretch. Smoke certificate is done. City is coming to do the water reading. I finished going through the basement and the clean out guy started working there yesterday. The only thing from last week's to-do list that remains undone is cleaning out my office. I think it's just going to have to wait until I have everything here. Then I can move all the home files into the basement and only have active files upstairs.

So what's on this week's to-do list:

  1. Meet the water department tomorrow.
  2. Take my mother-in-law for her haircut.
  3. Make room in the basement for items coming here from the in-laws' house.
  4. Touch base with two clients and see if we can't get their homes listed soon.
  5. Do final back to school shopping. Haven't done much. The Lil' Princess starts next Monday and the Lil' Diva goes back next Thursday.
  6. Blogging at Christian Children's Authors.
  7. Write two book reviews.
That list is definitely enough to keep me busy. What's on your list for this week?

Task It Tuesday - March 6

Last week I wanted to clean my Messy Bessy house. Some of it got done, but not all of it. Thankfully laundry is caught up after vacation and the living areas aren't in bad shape. Just need to vacuum and wash floors now.

For this week, I have only two tasks: complete the VA paperwork for my father-in-law to submit for his benefits and get myself on the bank accounts so I can start paying bills now that I am POA.

What do you want to accomplish this week?

Task it Tuesday - February 13

I am such a failure at this. LOL! Life--and work--keeps getting in the way. The good thing is that not getting them done has allowed me to remove them from my list in order to give me two new to-do items:

  1. Pack for vacation. We are leaving Thursday. House sitter and pet sitter for the pooch are all set. I'll let  you guess where we are going, but it will be much warmer than it is here.
  2. Get some reading done. Long plane ride, so this should be easy.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your week.

Tips to Get Organized and Write More

It’s a new year, and like many writers you may have set goals for yourself. Maybe you’re planning to finish the novel you’ve been working on for the past three years. You might have committed to sending out two queries a week. Or perhaps you’ve decided to enter your first writing contest.

But how can you accomplish any goal if your work area is as disheveled as Dorothy’s house after the tornado in The Wizard of Oz?

My workspace used to be the catchall for unopened mail, kid’s toys, and reference books. If company stopped by, I would hide my pile of junk in a pullout drawer which should have held my keyboard. After months of scrambling around in chaos, I decided if I wanted to be a serious writer I had to get organized. Here are a few tips to help you clear away the clutter, get organized, and have more productive days of writing.

Uncovering Your Desk

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve lost an important piece of paper on my desk and wasted valuable time looking for it in a pile of research, unanswered mail, and letters. I had enough surface area on my writing desk if I cleared away all the unnecessary clutter, so I looked for ways to clean off my desk.

I bought a filing cabinet and set up a filing system with research and current projects in the top drawer, and things I use less often in the bottom drawer. Anything I didn’t need on a regular basis was put in a cardboard box and stacked in the basement.

In her book The Home Office Solution author Alice Bredin suggests making a reading file which contains articles from magazines, newspapers, and trade journals you’ve been meaning to read. She says, “When you receive new material, quickly skim the table of contents and tear out or clip any articles that seem interesting or pertinent.” The articles are organized in such a way that you will be able to take them with you and actually read them, instead of leaving them piled up on your desk.

Another good way to keep your desk free of clutter is to make sure every piece of paper has a home. Invest in a set of letter-sized stacking trays. How you use them is up to you, but I have them marked in a way I’ve found makes it easy for me to accomplish my writing goals.

The top tray holds any query letters that need to be mailed. I always review letters in the morning when my mind is fresh, put everything in an envelope, seal it and put it in a pile of outgoing mail that I keep in a bin on my filing cabinet. The next tray holds all my research for projects I’m working on, and the last tray is for what needs to be filed.

Remember that drawer in my desk that I used to conceal my junk pile when company stopped by; well, scattered within that drawer were pens, pencils, stamps, post-it notes, and every other office supply I could use. I purchased a set of bookends with small drawers on eBay for under $10. Most of my office supplies fit there, and my reference books are now neatly placed behind my laptop on my desk. The few remaining office supplies are stashed in an old kitchen utensil tray inside the desk drawer.

Once your desk is clean, what else can you do to get organized and write more?

Creating To-do Lists

It’s ironic I am imparting advice when I have spent most of my adult life avoiding them. Lists keep you on track and provide a sense of accomplishment when you cross an item off your list. Compile a single list of unfinished tasks. Whether you create a paper to-do list or an electronic one, take time at the end of each day to review your list, cross off the tasks you’ve completed, and prioritize it for the following day so you can focus your work.

Your desk is clean, you’ve created a to-do list, but how do you keep track of the comings and goings of all those queries and follow up letters?

Tracking Submissions

When I first sent out submissions, I had this ludicrous idea I could remember the important details of each submission in my head. Well that idea lasted about three weeks before I figured I had to find some way to track the queries I sent out to which editors.

“A record of submissions can be something as simple as a notebook whose sheets you have divided into columns,” says author Mary Rosenblum, who is also the Web Editor for Long Ridge Writers Group. Keep this notebook handy so that you can jot down the details of every submission before you mail it out.

Once you’ve uncovered your desk, created a to-do list, and found the best way for you to track your submissions, it’s important for you stay organized. Open and respond to your mail immediately. Take a day every two weeks and put away the paperwork in your filing tray. Maintain your to-do list and use it to focus your work on a daily basis. Know what queries you have out there and who you need to follow up with.

Getting organized will help you be a more productive writer.
