It all made sense: how he had so much power and control here in Whitechapel among stronger, meaner, older men than him...how he knew about me, including that I was a vampire hunter....

I was excited to win a copy of this novel. Cozy mystery remains one of my favorite genres. I might try writing one some day, but I'm not sure how successful I will be.
There was a long pause on the other end. I was so disappointed. I didn't know what to add, so I simply said goodbye and quickly disconnected.
What book are you reading right now?

It finally arrived! The book that fans have been clamoring for over the last several decades: the release of Laura Ingalls Wilder's Pioneer Girl manuscript, the basis for her famous Little House books.
This annotated autobiography is edited by Pamela Smith Hill, author of Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Writer's Life. Since page 56 was just a map, this excerpt is from page 156.
14. Ma was afraid. In By the Shores of Silver Lake, Wilder used Ma's fear to reinforce the unspoken conflict between her parents and their views of the American West: "[Ma] did not say anything because nothing she could say would make any difference. Bu Laura knew Ma had never wanted to leave Plum Creek and did not like to be here now" (p.66).

I had to share this passage because I certainly wasn't expecting to find it.
As soon as someone entered the restroom, I rattled harder.
"Hey, are you okay in there?" the voice responded.
"Yeah, I'm fine. But my door's jammed."
"Oh, dear, I'll see if I can help." She sounded like an older woman, but I'd take help at any age. Together we pushed, pulled, rattled, and strained.
"Honey, this baby ins't going nowhere," she exclaimed.
I became indignant. "Well, if the door isn't going to budge, I'm coming under!" Without hesitating, I dropped to the floor and stuck my legs under the door.
She gasped. "Ma'am? You're in a cast."

This is an updated version of a book I read several years ago. I'm reviewing it for the author.
I wanted him to sit near me so badly I could have died. But he sat in the row in front of me, a little to the right. Not too bad. Now I can look at him all day. My best friend, Angela, sits beside him on his right. I hope she doesn't fall in love with him, too. He's mine!

Known for its beautifully curated gardens and brief-but-memorable cameo in the Salem-based flick Hocus Pocus, the Ropes Mansion has a haunted history dating back to 1774 when the Tory-leaning Judge Ropes was mobbed by a gang of Patriots who hurled mud and stones at the house.

Cycling
More than 50 miles of bicycle trails originate in the Boston area, including the Charles River Bike Path...and the Minuteman Bikeway...from Cambridge to Bedford. You can take your bike on any of the MBTA subway lines except the Green and Silver Lines, but you must avoid rush hours (7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm weekdays) and always ride on the last train car.
Have you ever cycled through Boston? I certainly haven't tried it.

My first class of the day was Spanish 2, or Espaňol 2. (I learned the true language in the class. Just like in my English class. The languages were soo true to the people of the countries. Minus 15 points for being a smart-ass. Education.) I entered the classroom, and the teacher seemed sane, somewhat down-to-earth, but you can't really get an impression of a teacher from roll call.

This book by Rev, Wesley K. Zinn is slated for release on May 16. I will be featuring this book on its release date at a handful of my blogs.
We are taught that we find freedom in Christ, and yet many Christians never experience freedom or peace in the area of finances. Unlike books that provide tools for good financial management, “I Got This” offers profound and practical insight into the freedom and flow of God’s economy. Wesley Zinn explores the principle of firstfruits, the spirits of poverty and generosity, and the importance of your heart’s posture in giving. Firmly rooted in Scripture, this book is filled with many personal vignettes that illustrate and validate the practical application of the message. “I Got This” will help you experience freedom in finances, encourage you to discover a heart of gratitude for God’s provision, and help you align yourself with God’s heart, releasing a flow of his kingdom’s resources into and through your life.
From page 56:
Faith in the unseen but never-ending provision of the Lord is wonderfully depicted in our introduction to Elijah. The first story in the Bible of this great prophet reads like a parable or fable, but it is an actual historical account from ancient Israel chronicled in 1 Kings 17.

Recent health issues have made me consider my eating habits. While I know I am headed for some changes, I'm not sure I'll have the willpower to accomplish everything. We'll have to see. I pre-ordered I Quit Sugar in January, after visiting Sarah Wilson's blog. Here is the official Amazon description of the book:
A week-by-week guide to quitting sugar to lose weight; boost energy; and improve your looks, mood, and overall health, with 108 sugarfree recipes.
Sarah Wilson thought of herself as a relatively healthy eater. She didn't realize how much sugar was hidden in her diet, or how much it was affecting her well-being. When she learned that her sugar consumption could be the source of a lifetime of mood swings, fluctuating weight, sleep problems, and thyroid disease, she knew she had to make a change.
What started as an experiment to eliminate sugar--both the obvious and the hidden kinds--soon became a way of life, and now Sarah shows you how you can quit sugar too:
* follow a flexible and very doable 8-week plan
* overcome cravings
* make food you're excited to eat with these 108 recipes for detox meals, savory snacks, and sweet treats from Sarah Wilson and contributors including Gwyneth Paltrow, Curtis Stone, Dr. Robert Lustig (The Fat Chance Cookbook), Sarma Melngailis (Raw Food/ Real World), Joe "the Juicer" Cross, and Angela Liddon (Oh She Glows)
I Quit Sugar makes it easy to kick the habit for good, lose weight, and feel better than ever before. When you are nourished with delicious meals and treats, you won't miss the sugar for an instant.
"When I quit sugar I found wellness and the kind of energy and sparkle I had as a kid. I don't believe in diets or in making eating miserable. This plan and the recipes are designed for lasting wellness." -- Sarah Wilson
Page 56 is a picture, so here is a teaser from page 57:
1. I hate waste...
So I've devised recipes that use the same core ingredients over and over, in different ways. Some might not be familiar to you, or might be a little hard to find in your neighborhood. You might like to buy one or two at a time and see what grabs your fancy. I don't deal in "exacts," so many ingredients in my recipes can actually be replaced if you've run out or don't want to buy a whole box of new stuff.

I sat on the swing, flicking paint chips, and watched Khayla and Kheelin try to keep up with Georgie and Sealy while they all ran around like fools, chasing leaves that were blowing off the trees. The whole while, I was thinking that this was turning into the worst birthday ever. Didn't anyone understand the importance of what day it was?
This is a middle grade novel that came to me unsolicited.
