Book Review: Children's Picturebooks: The Art of Visual Storytelling by Martin Salisbury with Morag Styles
If you like art history of any kind, you'll want to grab a copy of Children's Picturebooks: The Art of Visual Storytelling by Martin Salisbury with Morag Styles.
In this fascinating book published by Laurence King Publishing in 2012, readers explore the history of children's picturebooks from the days of painting on cave walls through to the twenty-first century. It discusses picturebooks as an art form, citing the work of popular artists; it talks about their importance in children's literature; and even touches upon controversial topics in picturebooks.
When first asked to review this book a few years ago, I did so to learn more about my craft. Though I haven't written anything brand new in a while, my first book was a picturebook and I have two more under contract. For this reason, the sections Print and Process and The Children's Publishing Industry were especially interesting to me.
Children's Picturebooks: The Art of Visual Storytelling is a resource I'll be holding onto and referring back to as I grow in my craft.
Paperback: 192 pages
Publisher: Laurence King Publishing (February 8, 2012)

Book Review: Stop The Diet, I Want to Get Off! by Lisa Tillinger Johansen, MS, RD
Trying to lose weight and considering the latest fad diet? You should read Stop The Diet, I Want to Get Off! by Lisa Tillinger Johansen, MS, RD first.
In this informative book, Johansen shares "The Skinny" on popular diets and why they don't tend to be effective long-term. From the 3-Day Diet to the Zone Diet and everything in between, the author discusses these diets, talks about how there is no magic pill you can take to lose weight permanently--darn, I wish that weren't true--and helps you put together a plan to lose weight by improving your overall diet and adding in exercise.
There's too much in this book to tell you everything, but I can say that what I liked most about it is that the plan seems achievable. Why? Because Johansen helps you understand why fad diets don't work; talks to you not only about portion size, but also teaches you which foods fit into what categories and how they effect your body; discusses reasonable ways to increase fruits, vegetables and water into your regular routine, as well as increase your fiber intake; and informs you what our bodies need per gender and age group for our nutritional as well as exercise needs. There are substitutions and grocery shopping tips and the Appendix includes additional resources.
As I have gotten older, staying healthy has gotten more important to me. I see habits I should have formed earlier in life that would have helped me now. In addition, as a result of reading this book I've already been implementing some of the changes to my lifestyle that I will be able to share with my family.
Stop The Diet, I Want to Get Off! is a must read for anyone looking to lose weight effectively and needing a encouragement to make some forever changes.

The idea for this book began at a wedding.
Who doesn’t love a good wedding? The clothes, the flowers, the romance, the food…
Ah, the food. As we moved into the banquet hall, the culinary feast was on everyone’s minds. It was all anyone seemed talk about. But for some reason, guests weren’t conversing about the dishes being served; they were swapping stories of diets they had heard about from friends, magazine articles, even celebrities on talk shows.
I’m a registered dietitian with a master’s degree in nutritional science and years of clinical and health education experience. I’ve counseled thousands of patients and clients on all of these diets. But hearing the guests only momentarily distracted me from my horrible faux pas of wearing white (gasp!) to a friend’s wedding.
“I’m on the Blood Type Diet,” said a woman with an impossibly high bouffant hairdo. “You’ve heard of that, haven’t you? It’s the one where you choose your foods based on your blood type. I’m an AB, so I’ll be having the fish.”
“Really?” her friend replied. “I swear by the gluten-free diet. I’m on it, my daughter’s on it, and my granddaughter’s on it.”
I happened to know her granddaughter was six and didn’t have a gluten sensitivity or celiac disease.
Then there was the stocky guy who was trying to impress one of the bridesmaids. “I’m a paleo man myself,” he said, piling his plate high with beef kebabs. “It gives me more stamina, know what I mean? It puts me in touch with my inner caveman. There’s a restaurant near my apartment that’s paleo friendly. Maybe we can grab a bite there sometime, or…Hey wait, where are you going?”
And there were three Weight Watchers sisters who typed furiously on their phones and argued over their meals’ point values. Apparently there was some discrepancy between their various apps, and the sisters’ discussion was becoming more heated by the moment.
I’m past the point of being surprised by the wide range of weight-loss strategies—some worthless, some crazy, some quite reasonable—being tossed around. In the past few years, there has been a tidal wave of diets washing up on the shores of our nutritional consciousness. Celebrities prance across our screens, promoting a variety of weight-loss schemes on talk shows and infomercials. Medical doctors star in their own syndicated television programs, exposing millions to weight-loss techniques, often unsupported by medical research. Other diets get traction on the Internet, racing all over the globe in social media posts, YouTube videos, and annoying spam e-mails. It’s hard to walk past a shopping center vitamin store without being approached by salespeople trying to pitch the latest weight-loss supplements. It seems that everyone wants a piece of the pie; the American diet industry tops $60 billion annually.
It’s classic information overload. You can’t blame people for being confused by all the diets out there, even as crazy as some of them may sound. I didn’t speak up to my fellow wedding guests that day, but it occurred to me they would benefit from some hard facts about the diets they so ardently follow.
So during the toasts, I thought to myself, I should write a book.
I counsel clients on these matters each week, giving them information they need to make the best choices for their health and waistlines. I find that all too often there’s nothing to the diets that are presented to me in my counseling sessions and classes. They just plain don’t work, particularly over the long term. And some of them are harmful, even potentially lethal. But it’s also unhealthy to carry extra weight on our frames. So how do we separate good diets from the bad?
In the chapters to come, we’ll take a good, hard look at the various weight-loss plans out there. I’ll pull no punches in my professional evaluation of some of the most wildly popular diets, both bad and good, of the past few years. And along the way, I’ll explore tried-and-true strategies for losing weight, based on my years of hospital experience, weight-loss seminars, and community outreach efforts. More often than not, the best answer is not a trendy celebrity-endorsed diet, but instead a few easy-to-follow guidelines that I’ve seen work in literally thousands of cases.
Enough is enough. It’s time for the madness—and the diets—to stop.

Mailbox Monday - September 15
Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles, and humongous wish lists.
Work has been keeping me busy. I am participating in this great peak performer class that I have some homework for, in addition to my showings and other fun things. I'm loving it and kicking myself for not getting into the real estate business sooner.
The Lil' Princess has started soccer and violin. She wants to pick up band this year, too. We'll see how it goes. If her grades go down she will need to drop something. She and the Lil' Diva have also started dance for the year. They picked up ballet in addition to tap and hip-hop. At least they won't be bored.
I received two books last week that I had requested for review.
Is the land of Asia a mystery to your kids? Do they know who lives there? Do they know how to pray for them? Asia is home to more than fifty countries and territories and roughly three-fifths of the world’s population. Could you use some help introducing your family to this vast land? This sixteen-week course presents a brief picture of six nations. It is by no means all encompassing. Its purpose is to introduce your students to the people of Asia, share their stories, and spark curiosity.
I pray that the course does much more than that, however. I pray that through meeting just a few of our brothers and sisters who live in cities and villages with names that are hard to pronounce that your children feel more connected with those who are suffering for their faith in Christ. Through stories and activities, we’ll meet the people of Laos, Bangladesh, Nepal, China, Iran, and Vietnam. We’ll get to know the children of these lands and hear about their experiences. Most of all, we’ll pray for them and their families. Won’t you join us?
This book is designed with children ages 8-12 in mind but can easily be used with older students as well.
Yell and Shout, Cry and Pout: A Kid's Guide to Feelings is an essential guidebook for adults in helping children identify and understand their emotions. Each of the eight emotions is clearly defined thorough vignettes and illustrations, keeping both adult and child captivated, thus creating an opportune time for discussion. By recognizing that all humans experience these emotions throughout their lives, the book provides a true sense of comfort. Emotions are not to be shunned, but rather embraced and explained to provide a positive development environment for all children.
The next few came together unsolicited from the publisher. I'm not going to review them, but I'll probably make mention of them at my kid's book blog. This author is one of my favorites for preschool books.
Is bunny playing on the swings all by himself? And who is gliding down the slide? This playful, interactive book offers a surprise on every page, inviting children to slide the flap to look at a whole new picture. A delightful little book in which toddlers can look and move to find the hidden pictures at the playground.
Is the pilot flying all alone in his plane? And will the fast car win the race? A delightful little book in which toddlers can look and move to find the hidden pictures. The unique extending system in this playful, interactive book offers a surprise on every page, inviting children to slide the flap to look at a whole new picture.
It’s a nice day today. I put on my bib and eat breakfast. Yummy. Then I go and play. I also take a bath today. I wash myself and play with my boat. Then it’s time for bed. An ideal book for babies, toddlers and preschoolers to learn all about what happens in a day.
How fun the four seasons are! In winter I love to play in the snow and in spring beautiful blossoms grow on the trees. In summer the sun shines nice and warm and in fall I love to jump in the puddles. Everything about the seasons of the year that toddlers and preschoolers would want to (and need to) know. Filled with recognizable pictures, these books stimulate the language development of young children. Printed on thick and sturdy paper, with round corners and a soft quilted cover, it makes a sturdy and delightful gift.
I picked up this Kindle freebie for myself too.
Some men don't realize the right woman is the one they aren't pursuing....
As soon as Sally Larson meets Rick Johnson, she knows he's the one for her. The catch? He's interested in her friend, Ethel Mae. But Sally has a plan. With Ethel Mae's help, she convinces Rick that the only way he'll get Ethel Mae is to make her jealous. So he agrees to pretend to be interested in Sally in order to get Ethel Mae's attention.
But Rick has a trick or two up his sleeve, and Sally just might find that the one playing cat is really the mouse.
What did you mailbox look like this week?
P.S. Look for a huge kid's picture book giveaway tomorrow!

Mailbox Monday - July 21
Mailbox Monday is a meme started by Marcia of To Be Continued. Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. It now has a permanent home at the Mailbox Monday blog.
Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles, and humongous wish lists.
Though I am waiting on two or three books to arrive, they haven't made it here yet. Here's what came in from my latest library trip.
MTV’s original VJs offer a behind-the-scenes oral history of the early years of MTV, 1981 to 1987, when it was exploding, reshaping the culture, and creating “the MTV generation.”
Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter, and Martha Quinn (along with the late J. J. Jackson) had front-row seats to a cultural revolution—and the hijinks of music stars like Adam Ant, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, and Duran Duran. Their worlds collided, of course: John Cougar invited Nina to a late-night “party” that proved to be a seduction attempt. Mark partied with David Lee Roth, who offered him cocaine and groupies. Aretha Franklin made chili for Alan. Bob Dylan whisked Martha off to Ireland in his private jet.
But while VJ has plenty of dish—secret romances, nude photographs, incoherent celebrities—it also reveals how four VJs grew up alongside MTV’s devoted viewers and became that generation’s trusted narrators. They tell the story of the ’80s, from the neon-colored drawstring pants to the Reagan administration, and offer a deeper understanding of how MTV changed our culture. Or as the VJs put it: “We’re the reason you have no attention span.”
I loved MTV growing up and the original VJs were on when I was growing up. It used to be a great channel.

Juggling Family and Career by Jo Linsdell
Being a writer is a pretty glamorous life right? You wake up relaxed and full of energy. Inspiration bursting out of you. You get to sit around all day drinking tea and the words just flow out of you on to your computer. Once the manuscript is finished, of course the first draft is already perfect and so there's no need to waste time editing, it's off to be published and available to your millions of fans in the matter of days. With the hard work out of the way you can now enjoy the many celebrity events and concentrate on which interview offers you're going to agree to do. Ah yes, being a writer is wonderful....
Sadly that's not quite how my days tend to unfold. Here's a brief summary of what happens on a typical day:
7 am (or earlier): Get woken up by 2-year-old son jumping on me and calling out "mamma." Try to convince him to have a snuggle so I have a minute to wake up properly. Fail miserably as he's already asking for breakfast and pulling me out of bed. Before I even manage to stand up, 5-year-old son has joined us and is asking for breakfast too.
8am: Kids have eaten breakfast, been dressed, teeth brushed, hair done, etc... and are ready for playschool/school. Time to put on shoes and out the door we go.
8:02am: Back indoors because we forgot something. School run take two.
8:45am: Home. Time to have a cup of tea and breakfast. Try to tidy up kitchen whilst kettle boils. Put load in the washing machine, and make beds.
9:30am: House now looks less like a bomb site. Turn computer on. Quick check of social media sites. Reply to all notifications and messages. Check have at least some content programmed for posting during the week. Next check blogs and schedule posts. Feel a bit more organised and eat chocolate bar to celebrate.
11am: Those books/articles aren't going to write themselves. Put on some music to motivate and inspire and open files. Doing well but get sidetracked when realise needed to buy stuff, make appointments, etc. for kids. Make mental note of shopping list whilst hanging washing out. Inspiration strikes and run back to computer.
12 noon: Starting to feel hungry but have too much on to do list and so eat more chocolate. Manage to tick off a few blog posts, record a quick video for YouTube, and send out queries for guest posts and blog interviews.
12:30pm: Time to collect 2-year-old from playschool. Quick stop at the park on way home to play on swings and slides. Son falls over and goes into panic that will need to go to hospital... again. Luckily nothing serious and can go home.
1:30pm: Time for lunch. 2-year-old has eaten at playschool but is still hungry. Prepare lunch for self, him, and hubby. Then put 2-year-old down for a nap as very tried and starting to act up. Need to lay down in bed with him until he falls asleep, as refuses to go to bed by himself. Once asleep, peel self out of bed without waking him and return to computer to get some more work done.
3pm: 2-year-old now awake again and full of energy. Put on Peppa pig, give juice and snack, and cross fingers that will keep him busy. Need to finish this part of text before forget what was writing.
3:30pm: With difficulty finish writing piece whilst 2-year-old mistakes me for a climbing frame. manage to remove child from around neck and get ready to collect 5-year-old from school.
4:45pm: Back home again and kids are demanding food and drink. Check school diary and mark important dates on calendar. 5-year-old announces that needs yet another book/stationary for school and so add to to-do list for tomorrow. Chat about school day and play games.
5:30pm: Kids looking tired and so put on cartoons so they can chill. Take advantage of quiet time to check in on social media sites, make some posts, reply to comments, and share some posts from newsfeeds.
6pm: Kids fighting on sofa. Time out for both. Peace made and after a quick game together both happy again. They then start asking when dinner will be ready. Time to cook.
7:30pm: Dinner eaten. Prepare bath for kids and get them in PJ's.
8:15pm: Prepare warm milk for boys and we read a story together as they drink it. Love being snuggled up together and remember how much I love being a mum.
8:30pm: 5-year-old in bed. 2-year-old refusing to go to bed. Take laptop to bed with me and try to get some more work done. Up and down about every 5 minutes putting 2-year-old back to bed.
9:30pm: 2-year-old has finally caved in and is asleep in his bed. Almost time to do a radio interview. Prepare notes and feel thankful that people can only hear me and not see me as looking far from glamorous.
10pm: Go live on air for radio interview. Have fun chatting with host and feel good about self and book.
11pm: Embed recording of radio interview on website and share link on social media sites. Feedback is good and so enthusiastically write up to do list for tomorrow. Ah yes, tomorrow will be amazing. Buzzing and can't get to sleep so write some notes with ideas for new books and blog posts.
12 midnight Why am I still awake? Force self to put laptop and notepad away and turn light off. Think through tomorrow's to-do list and slowly drift off to sleep knowing that yet another late night will make tomorrow's wake up call even harder.
I love my family and I love my job. Both keep me VERY busy. One of the great things about being a writer, though, is that I have the flexibility to be with my family and work around them. I write when I can and
thanks to the internet can market my books without leaving my house. I work late nights because I love my job and, although I don't want it to take away too much time from my family, it's part of who I am. I'm not just a mummy. I'm a writer mummy. It's not always easy to juggle career and family but it can be done and it's totally worth it.

Interview with Susan Maiava, Author of Fat Chance! The no-going-back Weight Loss Workbook
Welcome, Susan. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Hi Cheryl,
Thanks so much for the opportunity to introduce Fat Chance! The no-going-back Weight Loss Workbook to your readers. A bit about myself? Well I have had an interesting range of life experiences from being an overseas volunteer (like a Peace Corp volunteer) to being a university lecturer, from being a mother to being an author and business owner.
But my chief qualification here is that I was significantly overweight for many years, so I can identify with anyone who is overweight and wants desperately to lose weight. I was tired of the debilitating effect it had on my life and when I looked into the future I didn’t want to be like that for the rest of my life. I couldn’t keep up with my children. It was hugely embarrassing to tell the shop assistant that the XXL was too small. So I gave up shopping for clothes.
Physically I snored, I got headaches and heartburn, my skin chaffed and I was borderline pre-diabetic (all those are gone now). It was hugely embarrassing to walk at normal speed with friends, trying desperately to hide my puffing. So I dropped out of activities (or was not included). I was an observer rather than a participant and I desperately wanted to participate in life.
But for me personally one of the biggest issues was that I had a lot to contribute but was not taken seriously. I was undervalued and overlooked in my professional career. Despite my size I was invisible. I wanted to be taken seriously – that was a key motivation for me.
What made you decide to write Fat Chance! The Weight Loss Workbook?
When I was losing weight I was always looking for good advice but I never found what I was looking for on the bookshelves. There were certainly inspiring personal stories of weight loss. There were prescriptive books full of diet plans written by professionals who had never been overweight (many of these did contain good technical advice which, incidentally, overweight people already know). And there were a range of ‘wacky’ restrictive pseudo-science options.
But most focused on dieting or sticking to diets and there was nothing (in my view) that combined a comprehensive approach to changing your lifestyle, including dealing with emotional hunger, changing your thinking, habits and behaviors, eating better, working with your body and getting active, with a personal, reflective, interactive workbook format.
So after I had lost weight I decided to research and write it myself. I had written a book before and I know how to research so I decided to fill what I believe is an enormous gap in the market. So when I wrote Fat Chance! I combined the best current research with my insider knowledge of what it was like to be overweight and how overweight people think. That combination is key.
How is it different from other weight loss books on the market?
The Fat Chance! slogan sums it up in a nutshell: “Forget about how fat people diet. Focus on how slim people eat.” The key point of difference is Fat Chance! is absolutely definitely not a diet. Instead it facilitates a lifestyle change focused on learning to think and eat like a slim person, forever.
The greatest misconception people have about losing weight is that you lose weight by dieting for a certain time (and then going back to your old behavior). One of my first insights was the realization that if you eat the amount of food needed to maintain your goal slim weight every day, you would, over time, reach and maintain that weight, just as slim people do, keeping the weight off forever.
With Fat Chance! you learn to eat for your slim weight from Day 1. The new skills and strategies you adopt to do this are yours for the rest of your life. I think that is the key difference and is why this is not a diet. The end goal is to live differently. The weight-loss will happen as a result of changing your lifestyle.
The second major point of difference is the engaging, interactive workbook format. Research has shown that food journaling alone is a very effective weight loss tool but it is more than that. The question and answer format enables the reader to slow down, become much more self-aware, reflect deeply and draw out of themselves and make the changes they need to make at a very personal and individual level.
How easy is your book to use and understand for someone who hasn’t tried anything other than traditional diet plans?
I agree that it seems strange to not think you are supposed to be dieting. After all we have always been taught that is how you lose weight. But think instead of how slim people naturally maintain their slim weight.
Fat Chance! is extremely easy to use as you work through it just one day at a time. The journal style has several advantages. It provides a very safe environment in which to deal with weight issues, especially emotional issues; a sort of “dear diary.” Many people have written to me describing it as their new best friend. The workbook itself becomes the encourager, the friend who walks beside the reader on their journey each day.
Fat Chance! is well designed and organized so everything is covered. Each day of the week has a different theme: The six themes are: Thinking like a slim person, Working with your body, Establishing new habits, Dealing with emotional hunger, Getting active, Enjoying a healthy balanced diet and Day 7 is a Debrief and reflection. Groups can come together on Day 7. So each day is interesting and new but the full picture layers and builds week on week.
How much time does it take to implement the plan in your book?
Fat Chance! The Weight Loss Workbook is a colorful and stylish but very practical, interactive workbook which engages the reader every day. It can take as little as 15 minutes or up to 45 minutes a day, depending on the reader. Many prefer to delve into it both morning (to plan) and evening (to reflect).
The program is 12 weeks long, but because it is life-changing, in this sense it never ends. There is no going back to old ways. I don’t mean that you have to diet forever (a terrible thought). Instead you reach a healthy new equilibrium; a new lifestyle where you think and eat like a slim person forever.
It is important the workbook journey is undertaken one day at a time. It does take time to identify the changes that have to come from within and discipline to slowly and deeply embed those changes. The discipline is not in resisting food (we know that doesn’t work) but rather the discipline is in changing your thoughts and habits. And that is where Fat Chance! walks with you as you journal your progress.
What is one piece of advice you would give to someone considering a lifestyle change?
Completely abandon the idea of dieting, and completely embrace the idea that you are going to change your lifestyle and there will be no going back to your old behavior. If you are not prepared to change, don’t do it!
But also know that it is absolutely possible, and Fat Chance! will be there right there beside you, showing you the way. Ask yourself (Fat Chance! asks you a lot of questions): Do I want to live differently or do I want to be fat? It really is that simple.
Where can readers purchase Fat Chance! The Weight-loss Workbook?

Hi Cheryl,
Thanks so much for the opportunity to introduce Fat Chance!
