But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. John 1:12
Our search for the pathway to eternal life has taken us now to the Gospel of John. If a person has limited time in which to search the Bible for verses which tell us how we might gain eternal life, there are probably no better books to search than John and Romans.
We receive Jesus when we “believe”, as this verse tells us. What we “believe” is what Jesus, as recorded in the Bible, tells us about Himself and what He did for us. Jesus came to earth from heaven, where He had lived and will live for eternity, to suffer and die on the cross, to pay the penalty for our sins. Revelation 1:5,8,18.
"What Must I Do to Be Saved? is a superb Bible study tool." - The Book Connection
A word from the author...
The book was not created as a book. It became a book through a series of "coincidences".
About 20 years ago I would occasionally have a doubt about my salvation. I attributed it to the devil toying with me. But, one day, while I was still working as a trial attorney, the thought came to me that I should research my salvation at least as diligently as I would research any legal case I was working on. So I did. My goal became to go through the entire New Testament of the Bible and pull out every verse or cluster of verses wherein God, through the Bible, told us how we might gain eternal life. There were more than I thought and they were more specific and consistent than I had thought. It did not take long before I got the message--gaining eternal life is very simple, although not very easy--we must set aside everything we have learned in this world and simply do as God says. And, what He says is to "believe"--to trust alone in Jesus alone and the blood He shed on the cross as the full payment for all our sins--past and present and future. When I cast aside all that had been added, many times by well-meaning persons or institutions, and placed all my trust in the "real" Savior, the doubts vanished. The Bible message was powerful and simple and certain.
One day, while trying to communicate this message to a person who was very dear to me, that person thought I was attacking his denomination and harsh words were said. I still wanted to communicate, even if it ruptured our dear friendship, but how? I concluded that I not make it personal but would put it in writing. This book was the ultimate result. That near miss showed me that this book is a good way to show a fellow Christian how to find assurance that may be lacking or to show a non-Christian the pathway to eternal life. I've been able to use this book for those purposes many times since with many good results.
