On The Grind by Stephen J. Cannell--Book Review

Mystery, suspense, corruption, and a family torn apart are combined to create a riveting, fast-paced piece of crime fiction in On the Grind by Stephen J. Cannell.

A veteran of the LAPD, Scully finds himself charged with felony misconduct in a high-profile murder-for-hire case. Accused of having an affair with the suspect and getting rid of evidence, Scully is faced with a tough choice: resign quietly or face prosecution. His wife, Alexa, the chief of detectives, asks for a divorce and his son, Chooch is so hurt he won't even talk to him.

Unable to find work in any other police department, Scully seeks employement from the Haven Park P.D.--a department known for hiring cops other departments have rejected. He soon finds out that the Haven Park P.D. is as crooked as a dog's hind leg. His new partner, Alonzo Bell, might be the dirtiest cop ever to wear a badge. It soon becomes apparent that the entire department is merely the enforcer and collection agency for the town's mayor, Cecil Bratano.

When a Mexican prizefighter decides to run for mayor of Haven Park and promises to end the corruption, Scully is ensnared in a plot to make sure that things stay just as they are. Under constant scrutiny by his new colleagues, the situation for Scully becomes critical, and his wife, Alexa, might be the only one who can ensure he makes it out of Haven Park alive.

Already familiar with some of Cannell's television work--The Rockford Files, The A-Team, Silk Stalkings and The Commish--I eagerly agreed to review On the Grind when contacted by the author's publicist. This latest release in the Shane Scully series has left me wanting to collect all the previous books.

On the Grind is not cluttered with a great deal of backstory, so it moves along at a fast pace, drawing the reader in immediately and leaving her hanging on the edge of her seat until the very last page. While some of Scully's past is interwoven into the current plot, the only details provided are those that assist the reader in connecting the dots, making this a great stand-alone book. The mystery deepens, the suspense builds, and the reader will unconciously find herself biting her nails as the story races along to its satisfying conclusion.

Cannell's masterful storytelling is evident right from the start and never disappoints, keeping the reader engaged and pushing forward, afraid of what he might find, but unable to stop turning the pages.

Some might classify this as a "guy" novel, as the writing is edgy and tough in many places; but I contend that many women will also be fans of Shane Scully after reading On the Grind.

If you are looking for crime fiction at its best, look no further than On the Grind by Stephen Cannell.

The Last Queen by C.W. Gortner--Book Review

With unmatched eloquence C.W. Gortner's The Last Queen provides a gripping, fascinating story of Juana of Castile, the last queen of Spanish blood to inherit her country's throne.

The reader first meets Juana of Castile at the age of thirteen as she recounts her parents, Queen Isabel and King Ferdinand of Spain, ending three hundred years of Moorish domination to unite the kingdoms of Spain. As she watches Boabdil, the last Moorish king of Granada, surrender the keys to the city, Juana finds herself wishing to console him. She would remember Boabdil one day in her future.

At the age of sixteen, Juana is sent to Flanders to wed Philip, heir to the Habsburg Empire. She surprisingly finds love; but when tragedy strikes Juana's family, she becomes the heir to the Spanish throne and is immediately thrust into a difficult battle for power against her husband that ends up involving the major monarchs of Europe and threatens to destroy their happy life. And like her mother before her, Juana of Castile vows to secure her crown and save Spain at any-and-all cost.

In the opening pages of The Last Queen, Juana says, "The conquest of Granada changed everything--for me and for Spain." Having read Gortner's portrayal of Juana's inspiring, yet tragic, story I must concur. Never before have I read such a moving, heartrending story of a woman's dedication to her country torn apart by a pack of greedy, power hungry individuals. Seeking only to do what is best for Spain, Juana must fight against Philip, his trusted advisors, other monarchs of Europe, and even people she has known for years. The reader immediately sympathizes with Juana's plight: not knowing who she can trust, being separated from loved ones, watching as her happy marriage fades away, and making the kinds of decisions that her mother had told her she would one day need to make.

The Last Queen is filled with many complex characters. Queen Isabel and King Ferdinand of Spain, who arrange marriages for their daughters to further their goals for Spain, Ferdinand's illegitimate daughter, Joanna, and Philip's sister Margaret. They join the cast of greedy, power hungry men such as Archbishop Besançon and Cisneros of Spain to create a fascinating story that will pull the reader in from the very first page. Simply put, once you begin reading, you will not be able to put this book down.

Gortner's eloquent style combined with his attention to detail and rich descriptions make this a must read for anyone interested in historical fiction, Spanish monarchs, power struggles between the monarchies of Europe, and those seeking to read a decidely different portrayal of Juana of Castile.

I highly recommend The Last Queen by C.W. Gortner and look forward to reading more from this talented author.

Dr. David Gruder and The New IQ

Today's guest blogger is Dr. David Gruder, author of The New IQ: How Integrity Intelligence Serves You, Your Relationships and Our World.

From the White House, to the board room, to the privacy of our own bedrooms, and virtually everywhere in between, integrity deficits are destroying our personal lives, our businesses, our economy, our healthcare, our society, and our planet.

Creating sustainable integrity-centered solutions to today's vast array of major challenges requires us, as individuals and as a society, to take a fresh look at what creates life fulfillment. It requires us as citizens to develop a new integrity-centered vision of what we need to require from our leaders in government, business, advocacy groups, community organizations and the media.

The New IQ is the world's first road-tested guide to integrity-centered living, working, loving, and serving. Hailed as a "once-in-a-generation book," it provides the first step-by-step road map for restoring the vanishing virtue of integrity... for the sake of our loved ones, our communities, our businesses, our society, and our own personal well being.

Going far beyond being a self-help book, this critically acclaimed five-award-winning action plan offers a socially responsible way to attain personal, relationship, and career fulfillment during difficult times, without sacrificing ethics and integrity. Here at last is your complete guide to "personal development that serves us all."

Three Steps to Becoming a Freesponsible Citizen, by David Gruder, PhD

We all know that the United States has become ideologically divided, politically dysfunctional, and economically distressed. What few people yet recognize, though, is that a New Silent Majority now exists in the United States.

The New Silent Majority is quite different from the original one that Pat Buchanan named and helped mobilize into the religious right. The New Silent Majority is the tens of millions of people who are utterly fed up with the lack of integrity and ethics that exists today in politics, business, religion, communities, education, journalism, economics, relationships, and individual citizens.

The New Silent Majority includes people from all walks for life, cultural backgrounds, ideological orientations, faiths, and political orientations. It includes those who are pro-business and those who are pro-environment. It includes blue collar, white collar, and green collar workers. It includes leaders in all sectors of society.

The New Silent Majority is searching for effective strategies for restoring integrity into the fabric of all aspects of our society.

If you are part of the New Silent Majority, this post outlines three steps you can take to start making a real difference in your spheres of influence: embracing America’s Mission Statement, becoming a savvy citizen, and practicing synergy. (If you live in a democracy-centered republic other than the United States, simply replace your country's name wherever the United States is mentioned below.)

STEP 1: EMBRACE AMERICA’S MISSION STATEMENT

The United States, like all democracy-centered republics, has a Mission Statement. It is the Constitution’s preamble that mandated a servant government (of the people, by the people, and for the people) that functions at the intersection of individual freedom and the common good.

The heart of mature patriotism is Freesponsibilty: living at the intersection of freedom and responsibility. Freesponsible individual and corporate citizens put the constitution before their own ideologies. They do not indulge in entitlement, financial greed, ideological fanaticism or narcissism. They are mature enough to demand that government officials preserve and protect the constitution rather than cave in to special interests… including their own.

STEP 2: BE A SAVVY CITIZEN

Most citizens are on a political junk food diet dished up by self-serving special interests dedicated to manipulating citizens into believing whatever serves those interests. Most citizens spend far too much time consuming--and being coerced by--this steady diet of narcissistic lies, half-truths and convenient omissions. Fortunately, excellent nonpartisan fact-checking websites now exist, such as www.FactCheck.org and www.PolitiFact.com. Those sites are among the secret weapons the New Silent Majority in the United States uses to become savvy citizens.

Savvy citizens form their opinions, and make voting and advocacy decisions, by spending less time consuming political junk food and more time consuming political health food. They demand of leaders, especially those from their own political party, that they educate about all sides of an issue rather than feed citizens spin emphasizing only one side of it. And they demand of the media that they utilize far fewer spin-based pundits and far more fact checking-based reporting. In other words, savvy citizens become excellent spin-busters.

STEP 3: PRACTICE SYNERGY

There are three problem-solving strategies: coercion, compromise and collaboration (synergy). Coercion creates resentment and causes rebellion, rage, and ultimately terrorism. The best outcome compromise can create is that all parties feel equally ripped off by the “solution.” Compromise and coercion are incapable of creating sustainable solutions. The reason most bipartisan solutions in Congress fall far short of what is needed is because they are arrived at through compromise. Only synergy can end political polarization and create the solutions we need to the problems we have.

Synergy is based on three essential pieces of wisdom:
• Sustainable root cause solutions cannot emerge until the big picture is seen
• No one person or group can grasp the big picture by themselves
• The only way an accurate version of the big picture can emerge is by combining the wisdom of multiple perspectives.

Freesponsible Citizens master the art of synergy and demand that their leaders use synergy as their first-choice problem-solving strategy. The New Silent Majority doesn’t tolerate ideological coercion or any other type of coercion. You Have More Impact Than You Think!

Too much is at stake today for any of us, regardless of political orientation, to remain silent, uninformed or uninvolved. Freesponsible citizenship is more important today than it has been since perhaps the American Revolution.

Embracing America’s Mission Statement, becoming a savvy citizen, and practicing synergy are the three keys to the trickle-up leadership. The time has come for the New Silent Majority to lead the way back to Freesponsibility.

You truly have far more impact than you think. You have negative impact by remaining a Narcissistic Citizen. You have positive impact by becoming more of a Freesponsible Citizen. The time has come for all of us to embrace a more mature version of patriotism.

The Crypto-Capers in The Case of Red Rock Canyon by Renee Hand--Book Review

Following up the success of her first Crypto-Capers children's mystery, The Case of the Missing Sock--which we reviewed here--Renee Hand and the Crypto-Capers return for another adventure in The Case of Red Rock Canyon.

In Book 2, Max, Mia, and Granny Holmes are in Las Vegas, Nevada while computer genuis Morris, who continues to develop all types of techno gadgets, stays safely in touch with them from their house on Baker Street in London.

When a one-of-a-kind necklace goes missing from a theater production, the Crypto-Capers are hired by the producer to find it--never realizing that their very lives could be in danger.

Hand kicks it up for readers a notch in The Case of Red Rock Canyon. While a key was provided for the cryptograms in Book 1, there is no key included in Book 2. The clues for how to solve the cryptograms come from the story. In addition, while the level of danger in The Case of the Missing Sock is fairly low, one of the Crypto-Capers is kidnapped in this new one, and the remaining two have to solve the crime and find their missing partner.

Which brings me to my one tiny nitpick about the book. Keeping in mind that Morris, the technology guru, has a way to monitor the location of and vital signs for the missing Crypto-Caper, there doesn't seem to be a sense of urgency on the part of the others to find their missing partner. They go out to eat and partake in small talk about how expensive their lunch was, but until the last few chapters of the book, they don't seem to be all that concerned about their partner's fate.

That aside, the first two books indicate that this is going to an excellent series that will attract all types of children: boys, girls, puzzle solvers, mystery lovers, and even reluctant readers.

Again Hand makes the wise choice of dropping readers right into the action from the very first page, engaging the reader right out of the gate. It appears that the cases the Crypto-Capers must solve will grow in complexity throughout the series, continuing to challenge your young reader.

While you definitely don't need to purchase The Case of the Missing Sock to enjoy The Case of Red Rock Canyon, I believe young readers will want to follow the Crypto-Capers from the very beginning because once they start, they'll never be able to stop.

Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today by Kathi Macias--Book Review

If I could only recommend one book for mothers, it would be Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today by Kathi Macias.

In this uplifting study of some of the most well-known and some not-as-well-known mothers of the Bible, Kathi Macias provides an in-depth look into what we can learn from Eve, Sarah, Hannah, The Proverbs 31 Woman, Jesus's mother, Mary and others.

While I strive to make my reviews objective and not overly personal, there are some books that touch my heart in such a way that it's impossible for me not to speak of my personal feelings. Such is the case with Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today.

In my own reading of the Bible and as a Sunday school teacher I have had the chance to study some of these Biblical mothers, but Macias's books always manage to teach me something or provide me a perspective that I had never thought of before. From the author's chapter on how Eve was a mother without a role model to how Eunice and Lois--like all mothers and grandmothers--train up a child in the way he should go and then make the hard decision to pass the torch onto the next generation, Macias discusses the traits these women of the Bible exhibited and how they worked into God's plan.

As a mother of a full-grown son, one strong-willed daughter, and a youngest daughter who I can easily relate to because I am a former youngest child, there have been many moments in my journey of motherhood where I have stumbled, lost my way, and felt like a failure. Reading this book has allowed me to feel better about my role as a mother, has enouraged me along my Christian journey and given me hope for the future.

One of the chapters is dedicated to the virtuous woman from Proverbs 31. Macias wrote an entire book on her journey to become like the virtuous woman--you'll find our review of that book here--and what she learned along the way. Some of that is featured in Chapter 14 of Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today. It is wise that she includes the virtuous woman in this book as well because as Macias says on Page 231, "Understanding that this 'perfect woman' is more of a composite of many women, rather than a portrait of one, makes looking in the mirror and searching for her reflection a lot less discouraging...Even the most devoted wife, woman, mother, and/or businesswoman can't do it all--and certainly not all at once!"

Each chapter is preceded by a quotation from a variety of people, and each chapter ends with more quotations that fit the chapter's theme, questions to "think about and enter in your journal" and "A Mother's Prayer".

Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today by Kathi Macias will inspire you, lift you up, and encourage you along your journey as a Christian mother. A perfect Mother's Day or birthday gift, no mother will be left untouched by this book!

Rie McGaha on Paranormal Romance

Today's guest blogger is Rie McGaha, author of Grounded, Deadly Dreams, and the newly released paranormal romance novel, Blood Line.

Truck driver Joshua Kaine and his wife, Jessie, enjoy the freedom of the open road, until the night Josh is attacked by a rabid dog. Josh kills the animal, but his and Jessie's troubles have only just begun.

Following the attack, Josh becomes deathly ill, but three weeks later he's feeling much better - much stronger - much more alive. When the moon rises full and bright, Josh experiences the change for the first time, his body morphing into that of a large, gray wolf. His appetite - for both food and sex - is enormous, and he spends every waking moment feeding his hunger.

Jessie doesn't know what's come over her husband, but she's not complaining. At least, not until a clan of werewolves comes after her and her family, intent upon seeking revenge for the death of their leader.

From a remote mountaintop to the swamps of Louisiana, Josh searches for a solution to their dilemma, but time is running out. When the absolute worst happens, Josh is forced to turn the tables and the hunted becomes the hunter.

About the author:

Rie McGaha lives in SE Oklahoma with her husband, Nathan, and their youngest daughter, Rocky. Rie rescues abandoned animals, gets them spayed/neutered, and tries to find them new homes. The ones who aren't adopted remain with Rie's family. She currently has 14 up for adoption.

When the dogs aren't demanding her time, Rie writes erotic romance novels.

You can visit Rie online at www.riemcgaha.com.

Rie's turn:

The only thing I love more than reading paranormal romance novels is writing them! In this genre there are no rules and the characters can be or do anything the author can imagine, especially when paired with erotica.

Paranormal romance allows both the author and the reader’s imaginations to take them to places we’ve only seen in our dreams. I like writing about witches and vampires and werewolves and ghosts and other things that go bump in the night, but I like them to be more than the stories I read growing up. I like to push the envelope, stretch my own imagination, and make the places in my mind as real as the room I’m sitting in, not only for myself, but for the readers as well. As we all know, life can be less than what we dreamed it would be and the day-to-day details can leave us dragging, tired and less than enchanted with our existence. Although it would be nice to board a cruise ship and escape to an island somewhere, that’s not a viable option for most of us, but escaping into a world of make believe is only a novel away.

When I can create the man of my dreams in my imagination and then bring him to life with words so that others experience my fantasies the way I do, it gives me a feeling of satisfaction. When I’m able to tease and titillate the senses as well, I feel a part of my youth being revived!

I always loved bedtime stories when I was a little girl, so being able to write bedtime stories for grown up girls is a dream come true. Imagine being able to lie in bed and dream of the most glorious life imaginable, with a prince in shining armor, or a vampire prince, or a werewolf or shape shifter, and make him yours for the night or for eternity. That’s my job! I can’t imagine a better one!

While I write mainly for myself, sometimes getting away from my own worries is only done through the imagination of another author. One of my favorites is Alyssa Day and her Warriors of Poseidon series. Who wouldn’t fall in love with virile men from the lost city of Atlantis? Another favorite is Sherrilyn Kenyon and her Dream-Hunter and Dark-Hunter series. These dark, seductive vampires are enough to make anyone dream of getting just one good bite! The Argeneau Family series by Lynsay Sands is another tale of sexy vampires that I just love to eat up when I’m sitting in the Jacuzzi with a glass of wine!

So when you go to sleep tonight, dream of your perfect man and know that tomorrow you may be reading about him!

Rie McGaha…fantasy that keeps you up
