Welcome to my blog, Phillip. What is Dreamer all about?
Dreamer is about God's perfect plan of redemption or grace as some will understand it. How would God offer redemption to warriors? He would come to them as a warrior. The lead character, David, is a failed leader. In Vietnam he failed to do his duty and some of his team were killed, the others captured and tortured. Years after they left the service God comes to them and calls them to carry out one more mission. It is through this mission that each is given the opportunity to achieve redemption. In the book I use the phrase, "standing in the light of men once again."
What inspired this story?
My reading the Bible about King David. The lead character in the book is patterned off him.
Reviewers have called Dreamer gritty. Why was it important for you to retain that element?
Evil exists in dark places. In combat, soldiers experience the darkest side of humanity as well as the most admirable side. If the story was to carry the feeling of the reality of what soldiers experience, the language had to be realistic, the combat had to be realistic, and Satan's followers had to exist in the world they inhabit. Because Satan is in the book as well as God.
Do you feel faith-based fiction tends to steer away from some difficult topics or views them through a romanticized lens?
Yes, I do. Christ traveled in a dangerous land. Evil was all around him. But he never flinched from facing evil head on. To understand evil one has to go where it thrives, see its face. The characters in Dreamer range from the head of the Argentine secret service, to a priest who no longer believes in God, to a hand maiden of the Lord. There are also murderers, terrorists, patriots, and innocents. The reader will see murder, torture, combat on the ground and in the air, as well as love and self sacrifice. All part of a Divine plan.
What is up next for you?
I am a practicing attorney, but I am also working on a second novel entitled, The Purple Panther, which is about a young American who joins the RAF during the Battle of Britain in 1940.
Is there anything you would like to add?
Only, that I hope readers will be give Dreamer a chance. Its story will resonate with people who believe that anyone can become a man of God's own heart--just like David.
