Guest Blogger: Ronald Kirk, Author of Thy Will Be Done

The world cries out for an imaginative but realistic Biblical guide to the life foreshadowed in Christ’s model prayer. No foolish utopia, here is a powerful, comprehensive portrait of a sinful world redeemed and transformed by Christ—including the tools needed to hasten the day.

The author weaves a tapestry of possibility–Christ’s people growing as salt and light, putting flesh on the Bible’s vision of blessing in every aspect of human life and endeavor, bringing joy to all peoples and glory to the One who came to save the world.

“Ron Kirk comprehensively applies the Lordship of Christ to all areas of life” (Peter Hammond, The Reformation Society, South Africa).

Isaiah 58 and the Book Thy Will Be Done: When All Nations Call God Blessed
By Ronald W. Kirk

I suppose that Isaiah 58 is not a Bible passage on everyone’s lips, but it is a powerful and instructive one.

Partly out of inspiration from this passage and after a lifetime of application to its message, I wrote a little book called Thy Will Be Done: When All Nations Call God Blessed (Matthew 6:10 and Psalm 72:17) from Nordskog Publishing. It seeks to show how Biblical thinking ought to and can affect every aspect of life for the Gospel, the answer to Jesus’ prayer.

How do God’s people become God’s kings and priest in the earth, the establishers of prosperous, free and just society?

Let’s start with Verse One. Here, God compels Isaiah to speak to Israel! He says:

Cry aloud, spare not; Lift up your voice like a trumpet; Tell My people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

Okay, Lord. You have our attention...

Then God commends Israel for their desire to please Him:

Yet they seek Me daily, and delight to know My ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and did not forsake the ordinance of their God. They ask of Me the ordinances of justice; They take delight in approaching God (v. 2*).

However, Israel complains that God does not honor their religious efforts:

‘Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and You have not seen? Why have we afflicted our souls, and You take no notice?’“ (v. 3).

God answers that their problem is not a lack of religious zeal, but where their hearts are and how they act on their zeal:

In fact, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, And exploit all your laborers. Indeed you fast for strife and debate, And to strike with the fist of wickedness. You will not fast as you do this day, To make your voice heard on high. Is it a fast that I have chosen, A day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush, And to spread out sackcloth and ashes? Would you call this a fast, And an acceptable day to the LORD? (vv. 4-5).

Do you, Israel, think your God enjoys your begrudging and crotchety self-affliction? Do you think you can earn God’s favor with human religion?

Instead God prescribes “pure and undefiled religion” (James 1:27):

“Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh? (vv. 6-7).

Hmm. God’s way seems to require serving others. The Two Commandments say love God; love man! This includes personal, familial, and civil love and justice, loosing the bonds of wickedness and freeing those under oppression. God requires the establishment of liberty and its protection with just laws. The prophet Micah puts it this way:

He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8)

When we finally start thinking with God, instead of the way that seems right in our own eyes, then God will bring about amazing things. From Isaiah 58 again:

Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; You shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’“If you take away the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, If you extend your soul to the hungry And satisfy the afflicted soul, Then your light shall dawn in the darkness, And your darkness shall be as the noonday.  The LORD will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail (vv. 8-11).

Great and bountiful blessings come with obedience by faith. When we no longer presume upon God neglecting His own very Word about what is a godly expression of life, then He will honor our lives and work.

For Pete’s sake, we spend years and years in education preparing to earn a living and make a career. How much more ought we to invest in learning God’s mind about work and play, about the arts and sciences, about civil justice and liberty. When we finally understand God’s ways and wisdom, and make the effort by faith, however clumsy and inept at first, He will bring the increase! And:

Those from among you Shall build the old waste places; You shall raise up the foundations of many generations; And you shall be called the Repairer of the Breach, The Restorer of Streets to Dwell In. [13] “If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, From doing your pleasure on My holy day, And call the Sabbath a delight, The holy day of the LORD honorable, And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, Nor finding your own pleasure, Nor speaking your own words, [14] Then you shall delight yourself in the LORD; And I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth, And feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father. The mouth of the LORD has spoken” (vv. 12-14).

God will make us His people leaders of men, the head and not the tail. Paul the Apostle told the Corinthian church that God is ready to punish all disobedience—that is remove the effects of evil men—when the church’s obedience is fulfilled (2 Corinthians 10:4-60.)

This then is the premise of Thy Will Be Done. Jesus prayed, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven to purpose.  Learn how to think Biblically about every imaginable subject upon a concise few and systematic Biblical principles.

Read it! Learn! Enjoy! Let it change your life!

Jesus Christ confronted Ron with His salvation late in his college career at the University of California, Berkeley. Graduating in 1974, he became a professional landscape architect. In entering his first church ministry, a lack of a Biblical material on education led him to the Christian History Movement and the works of R.J. Rushdoony. Since 1980, Ron has studied and taught the Biblically and historically identified applied-faith theology and philosophy outlined in this book. Its principles have now long proven themselves in the curriculum and methods of pioneering day and home schools founded and administered by Ron. 70 Ways to Get Your House Organized Before the Holidays

Many of us are hoping for a picture perfect house around the holidays. Of course, this time of year, my house usually looks like the Looney Tunes Tasmanian Devil pinballed through it. Between baking for the church, family, and neighbors, gift wrapping, and trying to shuffle around boxes of Christmas decor, I'm fairly certain one of the cats is destined to get lost in the mess. Regular chores seem to fall by the wayside this time of year, and it can be hard to accomplish everything with the added tasks holidays bring.

“70 Tips for Getting Your Home Organized before the Holidays” is an article that provides links to numerous tips to help you get your house in shape for the holidays. You'll find ways to clean, declutter, and organize your home so that you can sit back and enjoy time with family and friends. CFBA: Merry Humbug Christmas by Sandra D. Bricker

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Merry Humbug Christmas
B&H Books (October 15, 2013)
by
Sandra D. Bricker

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

For more than a decade, Sandra D. Bricker lived in Los Angeles. While honing her chosen craft of screenwriting in every spare moment, she worked as a personal assistant and publicist to some of daytime television's hottest stars. When her mother became ill in Florida, she walked away from that segment of her life and moved across the country to take on a new role: Caregiver.

The author says that it was her 8th novel that opened the door to finding her way as a writer. "I'm a Christian woman, first and foremost," she says. "So it was a bit of a dream-come-true when Summerside Press chose me as one of two authors to launch the Love Finds You line."

Sandie's real-life role as cancer survivor has parlayed into her steadfast commitment to raising awareness and funds for ovarian cancer research. Spearheading a series of devotionals for Summerside Press (such as the popular His Grace is Sufficient...Decaf is Not), the author has stipulated that a portion of each contributor's proceeds will go to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.

"Being allowed to combine my faith and my humor with raising funds for my pet projects ... and still pursue my writing dream," says Bricker, "well, that's the best of all worlds, as far as I'm concerned!"

And one of the author's pet projects is animal rescue, evidenced by the special bond she has created with one particular formerly-abandoned puppy -- a red-haired collie with "killer brown eyes and the heart of the class clown."

ABOUT THE BOOK

A Merry Humbug Christmas features two holiday romance novellas from hilarious and heartwarming author Sandra D. Bricker. -- the perfect gift to yourself or someone else at this most wonderfully stressful time of year.

In "Once Upon a Jingle Bell," A Bah! Humbug cruise to the Mexican Riviera is Joss Snow’s answer to this year’s quest to avoid the holidays completely; at least until she’s rebooked on a different kind of cruise altogether. Candy canes, holly wreaths, reindeer and ornaments seem to be stalking her on the 12 Days of Christmas holiday cruise extravaganza. An escape back to land is her only goal . . . until she meets a kindred spirit in rugged Irishman Patrick Brenneman, and then the game is on! Avoid Christmas festivities at all costs . . . except maybe for that one stop under the mistletoe.

In "It Came Upon a Midnight Deer," Reese’s guilt over abandoning best friend Joss on their holiday tradition of avoiding all things Christmas is trumped by the joy of her recent engagement. Meeting Damian’s family for the first time on idyllic Sugarloaf Mountain is about as far from that Bah! Humbug cruise as she can get, and Reese can hardly wait to get there. But from the moment they hit that deer in the road just two miles from the cabin, everything seems to go wrong. There are no drummers drumming or pipers piping this particular year! And once she sets her future in-laws’ family cabin ablaze, she’s pretty sure there won’t be even ONE golden ring in her future.

If you would like to read the first chapter of Merry Humbug Christmas, go HERE.

MY REVIEW

I don't often read humorous books. I'm not sure why, but usually drama is what pulls me in. This book is a bit of drama and a whole bunch of hilarity. And I loved it! I was just telling someone about it yesterday.

Joss and Reese are both great characters: career-minded women who are a bit quirky, with definite issues. What is neat about how Bricker set this up is that each story features what the best friends went through while separated from each other; and then the reader is treated to a reunion of the friends by the end of the book.

In the first story, we learn Joss and Reese have an annual tradition of avoiding anything Christmas. So they've booked themselves on the A Bah! Humbug cruise. Last minute, Reese calls to say she can't make it because her boyfriend, Damian, has proposed and they are going to meet his family to spend Christmas on Sugarloaf Mountain for the ideal holiday with all the trimmings.

Joss decides to go on the cruise alone, but when there aren't enough people taking her cruise she is re-booked on the 12 Days of Christmas holiday cruise extravaganza. The rest of the story is what happens to Joss on the cruise, who she meets, and how her avoidance of Christmas gets harder and harder. Patrick's faith and love of Christmas are at odds with all that Joss has done for the last several years.

The second story begins with Reese and her family sitting around the dinner table on a previous Christmas. She's never known a traditional Christmas because of her dysfunctional family led by her 1960s Berkeley, vegan parents. Move to the current day's story, and the reader finds Reese afraid Damian's family won't like her when they meet. Starting with hitting a deer on the drive up to the family's cabin, things go from bad to worse as anything and everything that could go wrong, does, with hilarious results. The only thing that aggravated me about this story is that Reese calls her boyfriend Damie. All I could picture is some girl twirling her hair and snapping her gum as she whines out, "Damie," in a sing-songy voice.

I loved both stories and Bricker's style for this book is equally wonderful. She took the popular song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas," and used its format to open the twelve chapters in each story. Instead of "my true love," however, we have, "Murphy's Law gave to me..."  This was a great decision and it worked very well.

I would instantly re-read these two stories if I had the time. I'll be looking for more of Bricker's work in the future.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through the Christian Fiction Blog Alliance. This review contains my honest opinion, which I have not been compensated for in any way.

You've Got Mail Monday

Amazingly enough, the mail slowed down a bit last week. Thank God! I wasn't home much. We took a trip into New York City Sunday into Monday, so the girls only had school on Tuesday. Wednesday was baking day for Thanksgiving because I hosted this year. Then Friday was set up day for the church's Christmas bazaar. The girls and I were at church all day Saturday, then we had service on Sunday followed by a meeting I had to attend.

The bulk of the craziness is over now. I'm working on getting the house decorated for Christmas

Last week, we received a small holiday gift guide from Sears. It came with coupons good through December 16th. As soon as I saw the catalog, it reminded me how much I miss their annual catalog and wish book. It was so much a part of my childhood. The only other catalog I saved from last week was the one from Princeton Architectural Press.

The December issue of HGTV Magazine arrived. The cover is so festive. My house will never look that good, but I like to find ideas to try out anyway.

The mail carrier brought one book with him last week, Flat Belly Cookbook for Dummies. I'm reviewing that one through the Amazon VINE program. Though I did receive two other books through UPS: Crabtree by Jon and Tucker Nichols and Recipe by Angela Petrella.

Hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving. Try not to stress too much as you get ready for the holidays.

Five Ways to Find Inspiration for Your Writing
by Paulette Harper

Every Writer needs Inspiration. No matter how many books one has written, there are times when we need a little inspiration to get us going.

Many times I sit at my computer, staring at the blank screen, waiting for words to start flowing. Sometimes they do, sometimes I need a push.

Here are five ways you can get inspired:

1. Pictures
Whether you take them yourself, look through an old photo album, or spend some time searching through Google, photographs are a great way to find inspiration for your writing. There is a Facebook group that uses pictures for this purpose.

2. Books
I use this method a lot. Reading what other people have written may be enough to spark a few ideas you wouldn’t have otherwise had. Grab a book and mediate and let the inspiration flow.

3. Eavesdropping
I know it’s not polite to do but it does work. Next time you’re at work, the store or the coffee shop, pay attention to what’s going on around you. Listen to the conversations people are having. Body language says a lot. Watch the movement of the people around you. Remember always have a pen and tablet with you.

4. Experience
This is the best teacher. Sitting at home may not be the greatest idea to stir your mind. Go for a walk, sit at the park, run or ride somewhere, go sit at the beach. Keep your eyes and ears open while you do it.

5. Music
Some people can write while listening to music. If this is you, grab some of those tunes and go for it. Playing old tunes can sometime jar memories that can be used to get the juices flowing. Try finding music that you’ve never listened to and see what happens.

Are You Inspired Yet?

We are surrounded by information, people, by stories. Things we see, people we hear, any person you meet can bring the inspiration for your next best seller.

Be Inspired!
