WSJ Wednesdays

Is it really Wednesday already? It's a busy week and next week is going to be crazier. I have to be at school four out of five days for a variety of things.

WSJ Wednesdays might be my favorite feature of the week. I do my best to stick to topics that are not controversial, though those topics are fun too. Here's something I find neat and exciting for the world of publishing.

When I saw this article in the January 20, 2012 edition of The Wall Street Journal, I knew I had to blog about it. Appearing on the front page of the Friday Journal section, "Blowing Up the Book" by Alexandria Alter discusses the wonderful technology available for book lovers. I'm not talking eReaders, I'm talking digital books that come loaded with videos, songs, animated shorts and pop-up graphics. Even a technology dummy like me can appreciate this.

The photo that takes up two-thirds of the page features Harry Potter, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the Cat in the Hat from Dr. Seuss, Elvis and Bob Marley. Talk about a powerhouse. Here's the scoop on these particular books:

  • Harry Potter eBooks will be available on a website titled Pottermore. The site is currently in Beta, but you can watch a video from J.K. Rowling that talks all about the site. I haven't read a single Harry Potter book, but now I might so I can get involved in Pottermore. It sounds fascinating
  • Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis - An enhanced eBook holds over eight hours of recorded conversations between the first lady and Arthur Schlesinger Jr. It also includes photos and archival videos.
  • Bob Marley fans will be treated to poetry and lyrics compiled by his daughter, Cedella. It will also include family photos and links to his music.
  • Peter Guralnick's Careless Love biography of Elvis will be rereleased, including extras like videos, music clips and interviews.
  • The photo of the Cat in the Hat mentions the continued popularity of Dr. Seuss. The bubble states, "More than one million Dr. Seuss children's-book apps have sold on Apple devices in the last two years."
I find this last one especially exciting for the children's book market. The last stats I had seen about eBooks for this market were less than impressive. Evolving technology certainly seems to have made an impact. My girls read printed and eBooks. Printed books are still the norm for them, but more and more they are using their iPods or my Kindles to read.

Alter mentions in her article that some remain skeptical that readers will pay more for extra features or they do not want these digital extras interrupting their reading experience. According to the article, eBook publisher Jane Friedman, CEO of Open Road Media, states consumers aren't asking for these extras. She says, "It takes it from being a reading experience to something else, and we are publishers."

I see Friedman's point, but I have to disagree. Kids of today have been brought up in a world where information is at their fingertips, TV can be on 24/7, and their gaming options are almost endless. It seems the kids who own cell phones and iPods are getting younger and younger. The Lil Diva (10) began bugging me for a cell phone before she was eight. She still doesn't have one, but Santa brought her and the Lil Princess (8) their own iPods because literally all of their close friends have one. This has allowed them to stay in touch with their friends even if they can't have a play date. I've also found some educational apps, that I'm not opposed to them playing.

What do you think of enhanced eBooks?  Are they fascinating or too much? If you had to wager a guess, what would be the next big technology break in publishing?

Tunes Tuesday - Anne Murray

This week's Tunes Tuesday is going to show you how old I really am. My mother loved music. Since she played it often, some of her tastes rubbed off on me. One of the artists she truly enjoyed was Anne Murray. Murray has a beautiful, deep voice that sang of love.

This has always been one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy it.

Book Spotlight: Shadows: Book of Aleth, Part One by Michael Duncan

A stolen text...

When the Book of Aleth is stolen, Aaron, captain of the Royal Guard, is ordered by Emperor Therion to reclaim the ancient tome. The mission thrusts Aaron into a world he's never known--a world of elves and dwarves, races long thought extinct; a world where everything he has known and believed is a lie.

A secret past...

Forced to challenge his long-held beliefs, Aaron and his companions, two soldiers of the Royal Guard and two men of the Dwarvish kingdom of Brekken-Dahl, set out on a quest to recover the Book. Aaron resolves to discover the truth, and rescue the empire he is sworn to protect.

Prologue

The Coming of Darkness

He stood alone. As the Usurper’s army approached, the tall, solitary figure kept silent vigil outside the high-walled city of Charis, the last free city of the King. Captain of the royal army, Protector of all Celedon, the lone warrior positioned himself like a bulwark between the unbreached gates and the Usurper’s evil horde, determined to stop the tide of vile creatures that continued to advance. At his command, those who remained faithful to the King waited within the protective fortress leaving him to face the enemy alone. He gripped his sword. Cold steel flashed with brilliance as the silent warrior waited. A halo of emerald light radiated from a small gem in the hilt and surrounded the protector.

A gentle summer breeze drifted across the vale, but it carried no scent of hope, only the half-dead stench of the Usurper’s army. Miles beyond the walls, the ancient forest burned unabated and belched thick clouds of smoke high into the air. Acrid smoke darkened the sun and shadowed the world in a ghastly twilight as embers drifted like snow from the sky. Thousands of vile creatures and traitorous men marched against Charis. Their approach echoed like thunder across the valley and shook the ground with every step. Through the haze and smoke, the Protector saw the Usurper, mounted on his black steed on a small hill behind his forces.

An explosion of fire shook the ground. The Protector stumbled to his knees and gazed upward at large daemons soaring through an ash-filled sky. The dark, leathery-winged creatures hurled flaming spheres at the lone defender. Each ball of fire burst in a violent detonation that shook the earth, but the sword he held radiated even brighter, its emerald glow thwarting every attack. No magic could penetrate the radiant circle of light. Undaunted, Celedon’s captain rose to his feet and held his ground.

The Protector’s heart raced with anticipation. In his steeled eyes, a fierce anger burned against the Usurper. He knew that his greatest challenge drew near. He suffered no fear, but hungered with the desire to avenge himself upon the hosts of evil. He knew his duty—to protect the King and defend Celedon, and at that duty, he believed he had failed. He thought of his wife and son and all those who remained inside, of those who stood loyal to the King. He gazed back toward the last, great city.

The high, granite walls of Charis guarded the hosts of those loyal to the King. Atop the battlements, the Protector saw archers of the High-Born elves, vigilant and ready to defend the city. The tall, oak gates at the center of the city wall remained closed. Along the ramparts, flags displayed the crest of the King of Celedon and fluttered in the breeze. Beyond the massive wall, in the midst of Charis stood the Tower of the Wind, a regal spire of white marbled stone. It shimmered in contrast to the black curtains of smoke. The Protector gazed up to the pinnacle of the tower where he saw a rampart and upon the rampart stood the King.

Reviews:

"This debut novel by Michael Duncan is a fantasy novel far surpassing anything I've ever read. I read a lot of Tolkien and Le Guin and this is right up there with them.

The characters spring to life off the page. Vivid descriptions pull you deep into the amazing world Rev. Duncan weaves on the pages. Sword fights, dwarves, elves, daemons and horros. A gripping tale of good and evil where you never know who the good guys are and when you think you know what's happening, another twist takes you by surprise.

My only complaint is having to wait for book two.

If you only pick one fantasy novel to read this winter, it should be this one."

--Clare Revell, Author

"Michael Duncan writes an attention grabbing novel full of twists and turns that carries the reader to a world filled with mystery and intrigue. From the opening chapter detailing personal sacrifice on the battlefield, to the closing page of determination against overwhelming odds, readers will be unable to put this book down. The story has just the right number of twists and turns to keep the reader wanting to turn the page and find out what happens next. I read the entire book in one day!

The characters are described in ways that the reader can picture them in their minds. The geography can be pictured just as easily. The basic storyline is the epic battle between good and evil, but what makes this story stand out from similar ones in the fantasy genre is the underlying concept that some of what the characters think is 'good and normal' is actually evil in disguise and some of what the characters have always assumed is "bad and evil" is actually good waiting for the right moment to reveal itself. It keeps the readers thinking while they read. Can't wait until book two comes out!

One personal caveat I would like to share is that the book made me think about the possibility that perhaps in the real world some good is called evil and some evil is called good. I do not know if the author's intent was to make that kind of statement about the real world or not. But I did get a sense that it was something I should be thinking about.

Overall, a great read by a fresh new voice in fantasy fiction."

--Dr. Terry Dorsett, Author and Missionary

"Excellent book, the story kept flowing and it kept me reading. I loved the little map that was given in the front of the story to show what the area is like. The characters and areas were well described so much so it felt like you were actually there with them. If you are a fan of Tolkein you will definitely love this book as I have. Well worth a read and I can't wait for the next in the series!"

Romance Novel Month: Stand & Deliver Your Heart by Killarney Sheffield

Mistress Sarah was once a woman of promise, until a greedy relative left her to fend for herself on the cold, hard streets of London. Now she does the only thing she can to survive and care for those she has sworn to protect.

Lord Byron Cobbett has given up on life after the death of his beloved fiancee. On a trip to London to clear his family's name he is involved in a carriage accident.

Sarah gets more than she bargains for when she unwittingly rescues Byron. She must find a way to convince him to keep her secret. Can she allow her self to love him and still keep her promise? Will Byron stand and deliver his heart to the auburn haired bandit and risk his own freedom?

Excerpt:

Another fork of lightning lit up the sky, and she wondered if the weather was an omen of terrible things to come. She tried to keep from stiffening in the cold, flexing her limbs slowly so as not to spook their nervous mounts. Her horse shifted its weight, lowering its head away from the pelting rain.

Sarah listened for any sound indicating an approaching carriage. Where is it? Has the driver turned around and headed back to London because of the storm? Maybe we are wasting our time sitting out here in the rain. Perhaps the lady in question is not coming.

Just when she was about to give up, the mare lifted her head, ears pricked forward.

Sarah listened closely. After a few tense moments the sound of jingling harnesses and the rattle of an approaching coach made itself heard over the wind and rain.

“All right men, here she comes,” she whispered over her shoulder. “Get ready.”

Reviews:

"Killarney Sheffield delivers an entertaining and memorable romance when she throws her characters Mistress Sarah and Lord Byron Cobbett together. She introduces us to London’s squalor, the highwayman’s desperate plight, the thrill of a midnight ride, storms, passion, betrayal, violent death, trust, the King’s business, embezzled monies, prison, corporeal punishment, family intrigue and betrayal… and weaves them into a fast paced journey. Oh, and her heroine is as feisty as she is determined to succeed, and her hero must decide if there is something to live for in life other than his grief. The twists to this plot provide more than just the expected romance traits, giving a deeper level of complexity and drama to a risky relationship. Killarney tells a gripping tale. Mistress Sarah and Lord Byron Cobbett make great characters to bring to life the gritty reality of life on the streets of Regency London and the tightrope tension of living under the scrutiny of the King."
