On June 19, 1938, a train walker checked the rail lines near Custer Creek in Terry, Montana and reported no problems. A few hours later, a sudden downpour created a flash flood that wiped out the bridge. The Chicago, Milwaukee, & St. Paul railroad's Olympian plummeted without warning into the raging waters. Two sleeper cars were buried in the mud, and the overcast night hampered rescue efforts. More than 40 people were killed and more than 60 were injured.
